BY MATT PFIFFNER

  • Hofstra's 133-pounder Lou Ruggirello was the first winner in the tournament with a quick fall over Cory VomBaur of Wyoming in a pigtail bout.

  • 125-pounder Anthony Robles of Arizona State, who only has one leg, jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead in his pigtail bout and defeated Brandon Kinney of Columbia, 12-5. Robles nearly knocked off No, 1 seed Angel Escobedo of Indian in the next round, but dropped a 4-2 decision.

  • Eric Hoffman of North Dakota State, who wrestled for Davenport North, won his first-round bout against Joey Fio of Oklahoma. Hoffman built up an 8-3 first-period lead and cruised from there.

  • At 149, Iowa State's Mitch Mueller used a pair of takedowns in the first period on his way to a tense 7-3 win in his pigtail bout. Mueller scored a takedown in the finals seconds to seal the win.

  • Iowa's Charlie Falck gave up an early takedown against Fernando Martinez of Army, but scored a five-point move in the final seconds of the second period and won, 11-7.

  • One of the biggest roars early in the round came at 125, when Mark McKnight of Penn State tossed No. 12 seed Tyler Shin of Oklahoma State to his back. McKnight went on to a 5-1 victory and will wrestle Falck from Iowa next round.

  • UNI's tournament got off to a rough start, as Caleb Flores lost to Brandon Zoetewey of Cal St. Bakersfield, 10-3.

  • It didn't get much better at 133 for the Panthers, as UNI's Josh Baldridge fell to top-ranked Franklin Gomez of Michigan State, 12-4.

  • Mack Reiter of Minnesota, a four-time State champ from Don Bosco, opened his final NCAA Tournament with a fall at 133.

  • Nick Fanthorpe of Iowa State earned an 8-2 victory over Steve Bell of Maryland to open his tournament as the No. 5 seed at 133.

  • Top-seeded and undefeated Chad Mendes of Cal Poly wasted little time in his first-round bout, with a 34-second fall against Steve Adamcsik of Rutgers.

  • In what was expected to be a thrilling back-and-forth match at 141, it was all one-sided, as Adam Frey of Cornell scored a 16-1 technical fall over C.J. Ettelson of Northern Iowa early in the second period.

  • In a rematch of the Midlands championship match at 141, Dan LeClere of Iowa met Zach Bailey of Oklahoma. LeClere won the title at Midlands, but Bailey scored takedowns in the second and third periods for a come-from-behind 8-7 victory on Thursday.

  • Top-ranked Hawkeye Brent Metcalf wasted little time in his first-round bout at 149, with a first period fall.

  • Iowa's Joey Slaton started strong at 133, with a 10-1 major decision against Dan Mitcheff of Kent State.

  • Iowa State true freshman 125-pounder Tyler Clark lost a heartbreaker in the first round to Luke Smith of Central Michigan. Smith sent the bout into overtime with a riding time point and in the 30-second tiebreakers, Clark was ridden out in the first one and Smith earned an escape with a second left in the next one, for the one-point win.

  • At 149, Nick Pickerell of Northern Iowa threw No. 12 seed Morgan Atkinson of Cal St. Fullerton to his back in the first period for a 5-0 lead, but Atkinson came back with a reversal and three near fall points in the third period for an 8-6 victory.

  • Ryan Morningstar of Iowa dropped a tough 4-2 double overtime decision to No. 6 Matt Kocher of Pittsburgh. The Hawkeye nearly had the winning takedown in the second one-minute overtime period, but Kocher scored with seven seconds left in the OT.

  • No. 8 seed Moza Fay at 165 became the first UNI wrestler to win in the tournament with a decisive 9-0 victory over Matt Epperly of Virginia Tech.

  • Defending NCAA champ Mark Perry of Iowa at 165 earned a quick fall when he won a scramble and ended up on top with a cradle locked up.

  • ISU freshman Jon Reader had a successful debut at 165, with an 8-2 win over Andrew Rendos of Bucknell.

  • Alex Dolly of UNI drew No. 1 and undefeated Keith Gavin of Pittsburgh in the first round at 174 and the result was predictable, a comfortable Gavin victory, 17-3.
