2008 NCAA Div. I Championships
Notebook - Session 2

BY MATT PFIFFNER

  • In championship action at 125, Eric Hoffman of North Dakota State (Davenport North) took on top-ranked Angel Escobedo of Indiana. Hoffman gave up a takedown in the first minute and fell behind 5-1 by the end of the second period. Hoffman scored a takedown in the closing seconds of the match, but dropped a 6-3 decision.

  • Also at 125, Charlie Falck of Iowa faced Mark McKnight of Penn State in a Big 10 battle. Falck finished off a takedown late in the third period after a long scramble, for the 5-2 victory.

  • There will be a big quarterfinal bout at 133, when Joey Slaton of Iowa and Nick Fanthorpe of Iowa State meet Friday morning. Slaton jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first period over Kenny Jordan of Nebraska and earned an 8-5 victory. Fanthorpe scored a takedown in the final minute of the first period and that held up in a 3-1 win over Cory Fish of Boise State.

  • Also at 133, Mack Reiter of Minnesota (Don Bosco) reached the quarters with an easy victory. He will face top-seed Franklin Gomez of Michigan State, who needed nine overtime periods to defeat Reece Humphrey of Ohio State.

  • Nick Gallick of Iowa State won the battle of the Big 12 with a win over Zach Bailey of Oklahoma, who had upset Dan LeClere of Iowa earlier in the day.

  • Top-ranked Brent Metcalf of Iowa scored four takedowns in a workmanlike 10-5 win over Kurt Kinser of Indiana.

  • Mitch Mueller of Iowa State took on No. 2 Dustin Schlatter of Minnesota at 149. Schlatter scored a takedown right off the bat and took a 2-1 lead with 1:41 of riding time into the third period. Mueller let the Gopher got in the third to try and win the match on his feet, but Schlatter scored another takedown with a minute left in the bout for a 6-2 victory.

  • It was two losses in a row for the Cyclones when No. 7 Cyler Sanderson at 157 gave up three near fall points in the third period and dropped a 5-3 decision to Michael Chandler of Missouri. Sanderson nearly had the tying takedown in the closing seconds, but the Tiger was able to fight it off.

  • Moza Fay was the lone UNI Panther competing in the second round and he won in style. Fay rolled up a 13-4 lead early in the third period and secured the pin to make the quarters.

  • ISU freshman Jon Reader has shown no signs of butterflies, with an easy win in his second-round bout at 165.

  • Mark Perry of Iowa and former MFL MarMac star Stephen Crozier of the Air Force met at 165. Perry rolled up more than six minutes of riding time and turned Crozier several times in a 12-2 win.

  • At 174, No. 4 Jay Borschel of Iowa was thumping John Dergo of Illinois in the third period when he recorded the fall. A pair of 174-pounders weren't so lucky. Aron Scott of Iowa State lost to No. 3 Brandon Browne of Nebraska, 8-4, while 2007 All-American Brandon Mason of Oklahoma State (CB Lewis Central) fell in overtime to Nathan Lee of Boise State, 2-1.

  • Jake Varner of Iowa State remained undefeated with ease at 184, with a first-period fall over Zack Giesen of Stanford.

  • It wasn't quite so easy for Iowa's Philip Keddy at 184, but the end result was the same...a trip to the quarterfinals. Keddy rode Kirk Smith of Boise State for 30 seconds in the tiebreaker and escaped midway through the second tiebreaker, for a 2-1 victory.

  • One of the biggest shockers of the night came at 197, where unseeded ISU Cyclone David Bertolino knocked off No. 3 Mike Tamillow of Northwestern, 6-4. Bertolino finished off a takedown in the final seconds of overtime for the big win.

  • A pair of in-state heavyweights also won. Matt Fields of Iowa and David Zabriskie of Iowa State advanced to the semifinals with close wins. Zabriskie's win was protested by Pittsburgh, but the protest was denied.
