2008 NCAA Div. I Championships
Notebook - Session 4

BY MATT PFIFFNER

Quick notes from Friday night's championship semifinal bouts.

  • Charlie Falck of Iowa led 1-0 over Angel Escobedo of Indiana with riding time in the third period, but the Hoosier locked up a bear hug and got a takedown and questionable two-point nearfall for a 4-1 victory.

  • Joey Slaton of Iowa reached the finals in his first year in the lineup with a 3-1 overtime win over top-ranked Franklin Gomez of Michigan State. Slaton pressed the action on their feet the second half of the bout and finally got in deep and finished a takedown midway through overtime.

  • Top-ranked Hawkeye Brent Metcalf gave up a takedown in the first minute of his semifinal match at 149 against Jordan Burroughs of Nebraska, but came back with three takedowns of his own in the next period and a half for an 8-4 victory.

  • Mark Perry made it three semifinal wins in a row for Iowa with a 4-2 victory over Nick Marable of Missouri. Perry came out on top of a scramble in the final 30 seconds with a cradle locked up and was awarded a takedown to reach the finals for the third time in four seasons.

  • The night ended on a downer for the Hawkeyes, when Jay Borschel dropped a 3-2 decision to top-ranked Keith Gavin of Pittsburgh. Gavin scored a takedown with 40 seconds left in the match and held off Borschel in the closing seconds for the win.

  • Top-ranked 184-pounder Jake Varner was the lone semifinalist for Iowa State. He scored a quick takedown and rode Christian Sinnott out the rest of the period. Varner led 3-0 in the third when Sinnott scored a late takedown, but it wasn't enough, in a 4-2 win for the Cyclone.
