2008 NCAA Div. I Championships
Session IV Outlook

BY MATT PFIFFNER

Breaking down Friday night's semifinal matches involving wrestlers from the state of Iowa.

125
No. 5 Charlie Falck (Iowa) vs. No. 1 Angel Esobedo (Indiana)
The top-ranked Escobedo has only one loss this season and that came courtesy of Falck in the dual meet, with a 4-2 win. Escobedo came back to knock off Falck in the semifinals of the Big 10 Tournament, 6-3. This will be the rubber match. Escobedo was injured in his quarterfinal victory, so it will be interesting to see what kind of shape he is in for tonight.

133
No. 4 Joey Slaton (Iowa) vs. No. 1 Franklin Gomez (Michigan State)
Like teammate Falck, Slaton has already proven he can beat his semifinal opponent. Slaton claimed the Midlands title with a 6-2 victory, but the Spartan won in the Big 10 Tournament semifinals, 10-8. Like the match at 125, this will be the rubber match and the most important bout of the series.

149
No. 1 Brent Metcalf (Iowa) vs. No. 4 Jordan Burroughs (Nebraska)
Metcalf owns a pair of wins over the Cornhusker, 6-2 and 6-0. Opponents have been able to keep the last couple of matches with Metcalf fairly close by slowing down the pace. The Hawkeye will look to pick up the pace and push Burroughs throughout the match to wear him down.

165
No. 2 Mark Perry (Iowa) vs. No. 3 Nick Marable (Missouri)
Perry won the only meeting this season between the two wrestlers, 3-2 in overtime. The Hawkeye will look to continue his strong wrestling in this tournament and not keep it that close. Perry is after his third finals appearance in four seasons and is still alive to defend his title. Marable scored a solid quarterfinal win over Iowa State freshman Jon Reader.

174
No. 4 Jay Borschel (Iowa) vs. No. 1 Keith Gavin (Pittsburgh)
These two locked horns for the Midlands title in late December and Gavin scored a dominating 13-4 decision over the Hawkeye. Borschel has been wrestling as well as any Hawkeye so far in the tournament and will have to bring his best for a shot at the upset.

184
No. 1 Jake Varner (Iowa State) vs. No. 4 Christian Sinnott (Central Michigan)
The Cyclone won 4-2 over Sinnott at the National Duals and 2-1 at the Midlands Championships. Expect another close, tense bout between these two outstanding wrestlers.
