Notes from Saturday morning's consolation semifinals
and 3rd, 5th and 7th place bouts.
Consolation Semifinals
-
125 - Charlie Falck of Iowa met Mark McKnight of
Penn State for the second time in the tournament. Falck won the
first bout in the second round of action, 5-2. McKnight won an early
scramble and tilted Falck to his back for a 4-0 lead midway through
the first period. A Falck escape made it 4-1 at the end of the
first. Falck escaped in the second after breaking the lock on a
cradle to make it a 4-2 match. The Hawkeye appeared to have a
takedown in the closing seconds of the period, but it was waved off.
McKnight was let got in the third for a 5-2 lead with riding time.
Falck earned a takedown to make if 5-4. The match was tied when
McKnight was called for stalling for the second time in the period,
but he took a 6-5 lead with an escape. Falck could not get a
takedown in the closing seconds and dropped a 7-5 decison.
-
133 - Mack Reiter of Minnesota took on James
Kennedy of Illinois in a consolation semifinal contest. The former
Don Bosco four-time State champ and Kennedy wrestled to a scoreless
first period. Reiter was ridden the entire second period and Kennedy
took down in the third. After the Illini grappler escaped, he earned
a late takedown and added a riding time point for a 4-0 win.
-
141 - Nick Gallick of Iowa State took on
second-seed Charles Griffin of Hofstra. There was little action in a
first period that ended in a 0-0 tie. Gallick chose down to start
the second and was ridden the entire two minutes. Griffin took down
in the third and escaped for a 1-0 lead, but Gallick scored a
takedown for a 2-1 advantage. Another Griffin escape knotted the
match, but he still had plenty of riding time, so the Cyclone needed
another takedown to win. Griffin was called for stalling late in the
match, but held off Gallick in the final seconds for the 3-2 win
with riding time.
-
165 - Moza Fay represented Northern Iowa in
Saturday morning's action against Nick Marable of Missouri. Marable
earned a takedown in the first minute of action after a scramble for
a 2-0 lead. Fay later escaped to cut the lead in half. Marable
scored another takedown and Fay another escape to make it 4-2
entering the second period. Marable chose neutral and scored another
takedown for a 6-2 advantage and let Fay go to make it a 6-3 match.
The Panther got in on a single leg late in the period, but couldn't
finish to shot and trailed 6-3 entering the third. Fay took down in
the third and escaped to make it 6-4, but Marable also had riding
time. The Tiger held on for a 7-4 victory.
-
174 - Jay Borschel of Iowa met Steve Anceravage
of Cornell in a semifinal bout. Anceravage got in on a shot early,
but Borschel was able to fight it off, get in on a leg and finish a
takedown for 2-0 lead. Borschel turned the Cornell grappler to his
back for what seemed like about three seconds, but was not given any
back points. In the second period, they began on their feet.
Borschel took the first shot and finished it to go on top 4-0 with
riding time mounting up. An escape made it 4-1. The Hawkeye started
down in the third period and was quickly away for a 5-1 lead and
then scored his third takedown of the bout for a 7-1 advantage.
Another escape and another Borschel takedown made it 9-2. They
repeated that again for an 11-3 Hawkeye lead. He then sent the
Cornell wrestler to his back and earned the fall in 6:30.
-
184 - Iowa's Philip Keddy took on Christian
Sinnott of Central Michigan, who dropped a 4-2 decision to Iowa
State's Jake Varner in the semifinals Friday night. Sinnott drew
first blood with a takedown, but Keddy was quickly out to make it
2-1. Keddy started down in the second period and was quickly out to
tie the score at 2-2. Keddy gave up another takedown to fall behind
4-2, but escaped right away once again to draw to within one at 4-3.
Sinnott started down in the third and escaped for a 5-3 lead.
Another Sinnott takedown and Keddy escape made it a 7-4 final.
-
285 - David Zabriskie of Iowa State met Big 12
rival Jared Rosholt of Oklahoma State. Both wrestlers got in on
shots in the first minute, but neither could finish. Rosholt won a
scramble for a takedown in the final seconds of the period for a 2-0
lead. The Cyclone chose down in the second period and escaped with
30 seconds left to make it a 2-1 match. Rosholt went down in the
third and escaped with riding time still intact for a 3-1 lead. The
Cowboy appeared to flee the mat on two Zabriskie takedown attempts,
but it was not called either time. Rosholt earned a counter takedown
in the closing seconds for a 6-1 win.
-
285 - Iowa's Matt Fields got the All-American
monkey off his back Friday night and looked for a third straight
consolation round win against No. 3 Ed Prendergast of Navy. After a
long delay to fix the Navy wrestler's headgear, the match finally
got underway. Prendergast began the match with a quick takedown and
2-0 lead. Fields escaped to cut the lead in half. In the second
period, Prendergast started on bottom and escaped to take a 3-1
lead. Fields took down in the third and escaped to close the gap to
3-2, but could not get any solid takedown attempts in the final
minute and dropped a 3-2 decision.

Tanner Gardner (Stanford)
This was the second re-match of the morning for Falck. He defeated

he could turn Gardner. Gardner took down in the second and Falck let
him go after going over a minute of riding time. Gardner got a
takedown on a questionable call, to take a 3-2 lead into the third.
Falck chose neutral in the third, just like in the quarterfinal

escaped for a 3-1 lead. Later in the period, it was Fanthorpe who
needed to take injury time. Fanthorpe scored a takedown in the final
seconds of the second period for a 6-3 lead. The match was stopped
once again to clean up the mat. Baker escaped early in the third to
cut the Cyclone lead to 6-4. Baker tied the bout with a takedown

Cyclone held on for the one-point win. Both wrestlers were wearing
bloody bandages around their heads by the end of the match.
- 141 - 5th Place Match - Nick Gallick (Iowa
State) vs. Matthew Kyler (Army)
Gallick scored a takedown in the opening seconds for a quick 2-0
lead. Kyler escaped to make it 2-1 midway through the period. Kyler
started down in the second and escaped to tied the score, but
Gallick had built up riding time. The Cyclone took down in the third
and looked to get away quick enough to keep the riding time point.
But Kyler stuck the legs in and got it under a minute before letting
Gallick go for a 3-2 Cyclone lead. Gallick was warned for stalling
with 45 seconds left in the match, but took a shot late to avoid
another call in the 3-2 win.

scored his first takedown of the match with 30 seconds left, to make
it a 6-5 match, but Sanderson also had riding time. Moley rode the
Cyclone long enough to erase the riding time, let him go and then
went after the tying takedown. The Cyclone held off the late attack
for the 7-5 win.
- 165 - 5th Place Match - Moza Fay (Northern Iowa)
vs. Michael Cannon (American)
Fay gave up an early takedown, but then escaped and earned a
takedown of his own to go on top, 3-2. The Panther used a tilt in
the final seconds of the first period for a pair of near fall and a
5-2 lead. Fay escaped early in the second for a 6-2 advantage, but
gave up a takedown to make it a 6-4 match. Fay quickly reversed
Cannon to get his four-point lead back at 8-4. Cannon chose neutral
to start the third, but Fay earned the takedown for a 10-4 lead with
a lot of riding time. Another two-point near fall for Fay made it
12-4.

for a 5-1 advantage. Browne earned an escape and late takedown, but
the Hawkeye finished third with the 6-4 win.
- 184 - 5th Place Match - Philip Keddy (Iowa) vs.
Raymond Jordan (Missouri)
Keddy led 3-2 with a minute left in the match, but gave up a

escaped in the first tiebreaker, Zabriskie with just five seconds
left, to send it into a second overtime tied 2-2. Fields countered a
Zabriskie shot, locked up a cradle and took the Cyclone down to his
