2010 NCAA Div. I Championships
Session IV Notebook

A quick rundown of the semifinal championship bouts at the 2010 NCAA Div. I Championships in Omaha.

125 - #5 Andrew Long (ISU) vs. #1 Angel Escobedo (Indiana) - The first meeting between the Cyclone freshman and the 2008 NCAA champ.

Escobedo finishes off a strong double leg on the edge for the first points of the match with 1:51 left in the first period. Long escapes from a turn attempt and gets out to make it 2-1. Long scores a takedown with less than 10 seconds left in the period for a 3-2 lead. Long takes down and escapes early in the second for a 4-2 lead. Escobedo in deep in a single, but Long gets out of trouble. The Hoosier takes down to start the third and hits a quick reversal to knot the score at 4-4. Escobedo is called for stalling before Long escapes for a 5-4 lead with 1:15 left. Long in deep and finishes off a the single leg takedown for a 7-4 lead late. Long wins, 7-4. 

#3 Matt McDonough (Iowa) vs. Cashe' Quiroga (Purdue) - These two Big 10 rivals met in the dual in late January, with McDonough winning by fall.

McDonough starts quickly with a takedown 15 seconds into the match. The Hawkeye locks up a cradle and turns the Boilermaker for three near fall and a 5-0 lead with 30 seconds left in the first period. Quiroga gets a late escape to make it 5-1 after one period. McDonough starts down in the second and scores a reversal for a 7-1 lead. Quiroga chooses neutral in the third period and gets a takedown to make it 7-3. McDonough quickly escapes and shoots in and gets a takedown for a 10-3 lead. The Hawk gets another turn for a 13-3 lead. McDonough wins 14-3.

133 - #2 Dan Dennis (Iowa) vs. #3 Franklin Gomez (Michigan State) - Dennis has a pair of close wins over the returning NCAA champ this season.

After a scoreless first period, Dennis escapes in the second, gives up a takedown, but escapes again for a 2-2 tie. In the third, Gomez escapes, but is called for a second stall call for a 3-3 tie. They head to overtime, where the Hawkeye finishes off a takedown with 37 seconds left for the 5-3 victory and a spot in the finals.

141 - #6 Montell Marion (Iowa) vs. #10 Tyler Nauman (Pittsburgh)

Marion with a takedown just 20 seconds into the match to go up 2-0. An escape makes it 2-1. Marion adds another strong finish to a takedown midway through the period for a 4-1 lead. Nauman rolls out for an escape for a 4-2 match. In the second period, Nauman starts down and escapes early. Nauman finishes off a takedown on the edge for a 5-4 lead with 41 seconds left in the period. Marion escapes with 10 seconds left for a 5-5 tie heading into the third. Marion takes down to start the third and gets a reversal for a 7-5 lead. Marion is called for stalling with 45 seconds left in the match. First warning. Nauman escaped with 35 seconds left to make it 7-6 for Marion. Marion holds off late takedown bids for the 7-6 victory.

149 - #2 Brent Metcalf (Iowa) vs. #3 Kyle Terry (Oklahoma)

Terry in early on a shot, but Metcalf fights it off. Metcalf in deep late, but can't finish in a 0-0 first period. Terry starts down in the second period and is let got for an escape. Metcalf gets in on a single again and works his way around this time for a takedown and 2-1 lead. Terry escapes with 25 seconds left in the period to make it 2-2. Metcalf starts down in the third with 1:20 of riding time. He escapes with 1:06 of riding time. Metcalf finishes off a takedown with 40 seconds left for a little breathing room and a 5-2 lead with riding time. The Hawkeye advances to the finals for the third straight year, 6-2.

174 - #2 Jay Borschel (Iowa) vs. #3 Christopher Henrich (Virginia)

Henrich in early for a takedown and a 2-0 lead. Henrich turns the Hawkeye for three nearfall, but Borschel hits a reversal to make it 5-2. Henrich escapes for a 6-2 lead. Henrich hits another quick single for a takedown and 8-2 lead. Borschel escapes but is in an 8-3 hole at the end of one. Henrich takes down to start the second. Borschel gets an arm bar, but Henrich stands up and escapes. Borschel finally gets a takedown late in the second to make it 9-5. Borschel starts down in the third and escapes early to make it 9-6. Borschel gets a stall warning, takedown and stall call to make it 9-9 with 47 seconds left. The Hawkeye rides him out for a riding time point and the 10-9 victory.

197 - #1 Jake Varner (ISU) vs. #4 Cam Simaz (Cornell)
Stall warning on Simaz with one minute left in the first period. No scoring in the first as neither wrestler really threatens on a takedown attempt. Varner takes down to start the second and escapes right away for a 1-0 lead. Simaz is dinged for stalling again to make it 2-0. Simaz takes neutral to start the third. Varner in deep on a shot early in the third, but a stalemate is called. Varner hits a low shot off a re-shot for a takedown and 4-0 lead. Varner gets a late turn for two back and a 6-0 victory for his fourth finals appearance.

285 - #1 David Zabriskie (ISU) vs. #4 Konrad Dudziak (Duke) - A rematch of the semifinals from last season, a match Dudziak won.

Zabriskie hits a low single and turns the corner for a takedown midway through the first period. Dudziak escapes o cut the lead in half. Zabriskie in on the legs again on the edge, but can't finish as they go out. Dudziak takes down in the second and escapes to tie the score at 2-2. The Blue Devils shoots in, but Zabriskie counters for a takedown and 4-2 lead. Dudziak earns a third escape to make it 4-3. Dudziak in on another shot late in the period, but can't finish before the period ends. Zabriskie takes down to start the third. The Cyclone escapes for a 5-3 lead with 1:09 riding time. Dudziak shoots again and finishes this time to make it 5-5 with 35 seconds left. Riding time is erased with 26 seconds left. Dudziak lets Zabriskie go, looking for a winning takedown. The Cyclone holds him off for the 6-5 win.
