March 5-6 at U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar
Rapids
Session IV Notebook
BY MATT PFIFFNER
The finals of the NCAA Div. III Nationals were contested Saturday night in Cedar Rapids. Below is a look at how the
four Iowa Conference wrestlers did.
125 - Top seed Clayton Rush of Coe finished off a dominating march
through the bracket with a 14-3 victory over No. 3 seed Tyler Erdman of
Elizabethtown.
Rush scored a pair of takedowns in the first period for a 4-1 lead. A
reversal and takedown in the final 37 seconds of the second period made
it 8-2 heading into the third. The Kohawk added a fourth takedown of the
match with 40 seconds left in the third period. Erdman escaped to make
it 10-3. Erdman tried a lateral drop in the final seconds, but ended up
on his own back for four more points and the 14-3 win.
174 - Defending champ Evan Brown of Dubuque fell short in his bid for
back-to-back titles. The Spartan gave up an early takedown against
Michael Schmitz of UW LaCrosse and trailed 2-1 at the end of the first.
Brown is a very tough rider, but Schmitz took down in the second and
quickly escaped for a 3-1 lead. Brown escaped in the third to cut the
lead to 3-2, but a Schmitz counter takedown in the closing seconds
capped off the 5-2 win.
197 - No. 5 Byron Tate of Wartburg met No. 2 Ryan Malo of Williams
College. Tate struck first with a double leg takedown in the first 20
seconds of the match. After a Malo escape, Tate hit another quick double
for a takedown and 4-1 lead. Malo got a late escape to make it 4-2. Tate
chose neutral in the second and finished off another double leg takedown
after a long fight for a 6-2 lead. Malo escaped to make it 6-3 entering
the third. Malo took the top position in the third, but Tate was bale to
escape for a 7-3 lead. Malo got a late takedown, but could not get the
turn and Tate won 8-5 with riding time.
285 - No. 5 John Helgerson of Wartburg faced two-time champ Dan Laurent
of UW LaCrosse for the title. After a scoreless first period, Laurent
escaped quickly in the second for a 1-0 lead. Helgerson took down in the
third, but could never get out and Laurent won 2-0 with riding time.
