2010 State Tournament
Class 1A Finals Notebook
By Matt Pfiffner
Notes from the Class 1A championship matches with comments from some of
the winners.
103 - No. 3 Jordan Bremer of Woodbury Central and No. 2 Brance Simms of
Twin River Valley met for the fourth time in the past two seasons. Simms
had won the previous three meetings, but Bremer won the most important
one. Bremer scored a takedown in the closing seconds of regulation for
the 5-3 win. The takedown was awarded at first, then waived off, and
then awarded again.
"I just wanted them to give it to me. I thought I was the aggressor in
the match," Bremer said. "I needed to get out early and use my offense."
112 - Top-ranked Tyler Shulista of Alburnett broke open a close match in
the second period with eight points, on his way to a 12-3 win over Kody
Krenz of Louisa-Muscatine.
119 - Third-ranked Ben McMahon of Don Bosco was called for an illegal
figure four around No. 1 Christopher Halblom's head in overtime, as
Halblom won his second title in a row for Alburnett.
"It feels good. But I wish I could have been able to take care of
business on my feet," Halblom said. "It felt really tight. Now that I
think about it, it did feel like he had a figure four on my head."
125 - No. 2 Logan Mulnix of North Linn controlled the action from the
start in an impressive 6-2 win over top-ranked Jake Kadel of New
London/WMU.
130 - Derric Thomas of Mason City Newman picked up his third State title
in four trips to the finals. Thomas used a but four-point move in the
third during his 10-8 win over Brayton Taylor of Prairie Valley.
135 - Cole Welter of Don Bosco joined Thomas in the three-time champions
club with a 17-4 win over Ben Huber of Hudson. Welter used a pair of
cradles for six points in the second period and took Huber down four
times in the third.
"We wrestled early in the year and I beat him by eight. I just gave
everything I had and went out with a bang," Welter said. "I take a lot
of pride in my conditioning and that shows in the third period. I went
out and gave it my all and put up a bunch of points."
140 - No. 2 Robert Walker of Martensdale-St. Marys scored a takedown
with 1:35 left in the match and held No. 5 Brode Hills of
Louisa-Muscatine down until the final seconds, in a 4-3 win for the
sophomore.
"We've worked so hard this whole season. We know the right time to peak
and pick it up," Walker said.
145 - No. 2 Justin Hoffman of East Buchanan used a spladle twice for six
near fall points in a dominating 17-9 win over No. 3 Michael Jensen of
Graettinger-Terril.
"He obviously hadn't been watching me this week. He must not have seen
me very much, because I've been hitting that funk," Hoffman said.
"People during the season knew it was coming and they said it was junk.
But it worked here.
"When I was looking up with 15 seconds left I still couldn't believe it.
It was an unreal moment."
152 - No. 1 Dimitri Boyer of Eddyville-Blakesburg earned title No. 2
with a 4-2 win over Tyler Ogburn of Corning. All of the scoring came in
the second, as Boyer scored a reversal and two back points and Ogburn
had a late reversal.
160 - No. 2 Levi Peters of Twin River Valley reversed No. 3 Jason Frain
of Riverside (Oakland) to his back and got the fall in 2:43 in a match
that was wildly entertaining the short time it lasted.
"I didn't want to wrestle him anymore. I wanted it to be over right
there," Peters said of getting the fall. "I didn't expect to get four
pins at the State Tournament. It's a feeling you can't really describe."
171 - Top-ranked Quinn Wilson of Riverside (Oakland) scored takedowns in
the final seconds of the first and third periods in a workmanlike 6-0
win over Dacoda Ward of Lisbon.
189 - Top-ranked Taylor Kettman of Don Bosco earned a reversal and three
back points in the second period to pull away for a 7-2 win over No. 8
Bryce Olson of Eagle Grove.
215 - No. 1 Jon Meyers of Coon Rapids-Bayard and No. 2 Jordan Simon of
Aplington-Parkersburg met in a match many people had been looking
forward to all season. Meyers earned a reversal and three back points in
the third to break open a close match, on his way to a 7-2 win and
perfect 50-0 season.
"There was a lot of nerves going into it," Meyers said of starting out
slowly. "I've been thinking if I won it, I'd be the happiest person
ever. I love to compete.
"When I got those extra points in the third, I knew he was frustrated."
285 - Top-ranked Caleb Wilken of Nashua-Plainfield reversed No. 3 Dylan
Lame of Mount Ayr with two seconds left in the ultimate tiebreaker for a
hard-fought 4-2 title win.
