2010 State Tournament
Class 1A First Round Notebook

By Matt Pfiffner

News and notes from the first round of Class 1A action.

103 - Two wrestlers entered the 1A tournament at 103 undefeated, but neither made it out of the first round. Top-ranked Zakk Buch of Belle Plaine handed No. 4 Lance Maguire of FD St. Edmonds an 8-2 loss and second-ranked Brance Simms knocked off No. 5 Phillip Laux of Pekin, 11-5.

112 - No. 1 Tyler Shulista of Alburnett and No. 2 Sawyer Farris of New London/WMU both scored falls on their way to a possible semifinal showdown for the second year in a row. Nathan Ryan of Woodbury Central needed overtime, but won with a fall over Matt Reed of Eagle Grove.

119 - Kolbi Kohl of Lisbon got a big round started for the Lions with a fall over 2009 State qualifier Kaleb Wessel of Nodaway Valley. Lisbon went 4-2 in the first round and is in third place.

125 - Zach Ryan of Woodbury Central joins younger brother Nathan in the quarterfinals after a 10-3 win over Alburnett's Colton Martin.

130 - No. 2 Nolan Oviatt of Logan-Magnolia and fifth-ranked Drew Proctor of Tipton each recorded pin in less than a minute. They face each other in the quarterfinals and both should expect a much tougher match. Two-time State champ Derric Thomas of Mason City Newman also had a first-period pin, while No. 3 Brayton Taylor of Prairie Valley needed just two minutes to score a 16-1 technical fall.

135 - Tait Simpson of Lisbon stunned second-ranked Jared Hefler of Ogden, 7-5. Top-ranked and two-time State champ Cole Welter of Don Bosco scored a fall.

140 - In a big showdown, top-ranked Matt Finch of HMS had little trouble with No. 4 Cole Hopkins of Coon Rapids-Bayard, 14-3. Finch tossed Hopkins to his back early with a body lock for four quick points and cruised from there. No. 7 Mason Waddell of FD St. Edmond edged No. 8 Drake Fanslau of Underwood in the ultimate tiebreaker, 5-4.

145 - In the comeback of the round, No. 8 Connor Christensen of Central Decatur trailed 15-5 early in the third when he headlocked No. 5 Matthew Dettmer of Nashua-Plainfield and got the fall.

152 - No. 8 Jon Elmore of Prairie Valley scored a third-period takedown in a 3-1 win over No. 3 Russ Godbersen of MMC.

160 - No. 4 Dylan Schrader of Wapello needed overtime for a 6-4 win over unranked Cody Morris of Bedford/Lenox. Top-ranked Blake Faucher of Guthrie Center and No. 3 Jason Frain of Riverside (Oakland) will meet once again, after both posted easy first-round wins.

171 - In one of the most entertaining matches of the round, No. 4 Colton Van't Hof of Sioux Center won 14-11 over No. 2 Matthew Schmelzer of South Winneshiek. Van't Hof scored 10 points in a wild second period.

189 - In a very tough first-round bout, No. 2 Nate Howard of Graettinger-Terril scored a takedown in overtime to edge No. 3 Andrew Nodvedt of Central Springs, 3-1. Nodvedt has escaped with one second left in the third period to force the extra period.

215 - Top-ranked Jon Meyers of Coon Rapids-Bayard remained perfect with a first-period pin over Nate Davis of Valley (Elgin). No. 3 Cade Lambson of Mount Ayr and No. 4 Mitch Montgomery of Lisbon will meet in the quarters after each pinned their first-round foes.

285 - Seven of the eight first-round winners won by fall. The lone winner by decision was No. 6 Brendan TerWee of West Lyon, 3-0 over Matt Eads of Interstate 35. Just like last year at State, No. 3 Dylan Lame of Mount Ayr pinned No. 2 Dustin Schwaller of Okoboji in under a minute.
