Class 1A Quarterfinals Notebook

By Matt Pfiffner

News and notes from the quarterfinal round of Class 1A action.

103 - No. 3 Jordan Bremer of Woodbury Central scored three takedowns in a 6-3 win over top-ranked Zakk Buch of Belle Plaine.

112 - Top-ranked Tyler Shulista of Alburnett and No. 2 Sawyer Farris of New London/WMU will meet in the semifinals for the second year in a row. Last year, Farris avenged a loss earlier in the season with a win at 103 on his way to the title. This year, Shulista has won both meetings.

119 - Third-ranked Ben McMahon of Don Bosco escaped 3-2 over Kolbi Kohl of Lisbon. He will be looking for his second trip to the finals later tonight.

125 - The top four ranked wrestlers rolled to quarterfinal wins. No. 1 Jake Kadel of New London/WMU takes on No. 3 Brandon Welter of Don Bosco in the semis, while No. 2 Logan Mulnix of North Linn meets No. 4 Jack O'Brien of Belle Plaine.

130 - Two-time champ Derric Thomas of Mason City Newman recorded his second fall of the tournament and will meet No. 4 David Walker of Martensdale-St. Marys, who took Thomas to overtime in January.

135 - Unranked Tait Simpson of Lisbon continues to impress with a 14-6 quarterfinal win over Alex German of Alburnett. Next up for the Lion is two-time champ Cole Welter of Don Bosco.

140 - No. 1 Matt Finch of HMS took apart 2009 place finisher Carter Oliver of Woodbine, 18-2. On the other side of the draw, No. 3 Dallas Houchins of I-35 trailed 2-0 in the third when he turned and pinned No. 7 Mason Waddell of FDSE with two seconds left in the match.

145 - Top-ranked and two-time State champ Clay Welter had his second tight match of the tournament, with an 8-6 victory over No. 10 Tom Meirick of Turkey Valley. Next up for Welter is a battle against No. 2 Justin Hoffman of East Buchanan.

152 - West Hancock freshman Gunnar Clark clinched a medal with a 7-2 win over Brady Kime of Sumner-Fredericksburg. A big showdown in the semis is No. 1 Dimitri Boyer of Eddyville-Blakesburg against No. 2 Tim Maroney of East Buchanan.

160 - No. 6 Jayden Devilbiss scored a reversal with one minute left in regulation for force overtime and finished off a takedown midway through the extra period for a wild 10-8 win over No. 10 Zach Jones of Okoboji. Third-ranked Jason Frain of Oakland took down top-ranked Blake Faucher of Guthrie Center, 7-1, thanks in large part to a five-point move early in the bout.

171 - A pair of unranked wrestlers nearly made the semifinals. Dacoda Ward of Lisbon did with a 5-0 win over No. 7 Brick Imerman of Guthrie Center. Unranked Austin Rasch nearly made the semis on the other side, but fell 2-1 to No. 4 Colton Van't Hof of Sioux Center.

189 - No. 4 Kyle Soderblom of Lynnville-Sully finally broke his quarterfinal curse. He had won all three of his first-round matches at State, but had gone 0-4 after. This year, the junior has his medal and a date in the semis with top-ranked Taylor Kettman of Don Bosco.

215 - No. 3 Cade Lambson of Mount Ayr scored an impressive 10-4 decision over No. 4 Mitch Montgomery of Lisbon. No. 1 Jon Meyers of Coon Rapids-Bayard and No. 2 Jordan Simon of Aplington-Parkersburg continue to roll.

Top-ranked Caleb Wilken scored late in his match for a 7-5 win over No. 5 Darin Adam of Pekin. White and Wilken meet in the semifinals. Unranked Joe Koehn of Valley (Elgin) stunned No. 8 Wil Rathjen of Durant with a fall in 4:55.
