Class 3A weight-by-weight preview

BY WYATT SCHULTZ
The 2010 Class 3A State Tournament gets underway Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Who will claim those 14 precious State titles on Saturday night?

Here is a weight-by-weight preview of the Class 3A State Wrestling Tournament. At the end of each weight class, The Predicament's Wyatt Schultz (WS), Matt Pfiffner (MP) and Jim Thompson (JT) give their predictions for who will meet in the finals.

103
With nine ranked wrestlers spread throughout the bracket, it looks like this was a seeded weight.

On the top half No. 3 Tyler Willers of Pleasant Valley could face fourth-ranked Juan Coulter of Muscatine. That's if he can get by Colin Strickland of Southeast Polk. In the other quarter bracket No. 7 Joel Northrup of Linn-Mar could meet No. 9 Alonzo Henderson of Waterloo West. Northrup won the last match between the two Mississippi Valley Conference wrestlers.

On the bottom half we start right off with No. 1 Colby Knight of Urbandale facing No. 5 Drake Swarm of Bettendorf. The winner of that match will meet Evan Reynolds of Norwalk or Jake Gotto of Western Dubuque. In the other quarter bracket is No. 6 Matt Birnbaum of Ft. Dodge and Adrian Lozano of Sioux City North.

Finals Predications: WS - Tyler Willers (Pleasant Valley) vs. Colby Knight (Urbandale); MP - Willers vs. Knight; JT - Willers vs. Knight.

With another weight that is evenly spread out no one gets a break here.

On the top half of the bracket is returning state champ Cory Clark of Southeast Polk. He will face a tough senior Dan Adair of Sioux City East in the first round with the winner likely to meet Brandon Thomas of WDM Valley. The other quarter bracket has Richie Eikenberry of Bettendorf against Bryce Lynn of Dubuque Senior and Jack Hathaway of Iowa City West against D.J. Robertson of Waterloo East.

On the bottom is Connor Ryan of North Scott against Chase Helenthal of Keokuk. Ryan was a runner-up to Clark at 103 last year. But he will have to get by Tanner Werner of Waverly-Shell Rock and Nick Sulentic of Lewis Central. Also on this half is Jake Agnitsch of Ames and Stephen Schaffer of Johnston.

Finals Predications: WS - Cory Clark (Southeast Polk) vs. Connor Ryan (North Scott); MP - Clark vs. Ryan; JT - Clark vs. Ryan.
