BY WYATT SCHULTZ On the top half No. 3 Tyler Willers of Pleasant Valley could face
fourth-ranked Juan Coulter of Muscatine. That's if he can get by Colin
Strickland of Southeast Polk. In the other quarter bracket No. 7 Joel
Northrup of Linn-Mar could meet No. 9 Alonzo Henderson of Waterloo West.
Northrup won the last match between the two Mississippi Valley
Conference wrestlers. On the bottom half we start right off with No. 1 Colby Knight of
Urbandale facing No. 5 Drake Swarm of Bettendorf. The winner of that
match will meet Evan Reynolds of Norwalk or Jake Gotto of Western
Dubuque. In the other quarter bracket is No. 6 Matt Birnbaum of Ft.
Dodge and Adrian Lozano of Sioux City North. 112 On the top half of the bracket is returning state champ Cory Clark of
Southeast Polk. He will face a tough senior Dan Adair of Sioux City East
in the first round with the winner likely to meet Brandon Thomas of WDM
Valley. The other quarter bracket has Richie Eikenberry of Bettendorf
against Bryce Lynn of Dubuque Senior and Jack Hathaway of Iowa City West
against D.J. Robertson of Waterloo East. On the bottom is Connor Ryan of North Scott against Chase Helenthal
of Keokuk. Ryan was a runner-up to Clark at 103 last year. But he will
have to get by Tanner Werner of Waverly-Shell Rock and Nick Sulentic of
Lewis Central. Also on this half is Jake Agnitsch of Ames and Stephen
Schaffer of Johnston.
119 The bottom half has last year's 112-pound State finalists in champ
Brandon Jones of WDM Valley and runner-up Eric DeVos of Waverly-Shell
Rock. They could meet in the semifinals if they can get by Taylor
Wickett of Bettendorf and Marcus Breeden of Maquoketa.
125 On the top half is top-ranked and returning undefeated State champion
John Meeks of Des Moines Roosevelt. Also on this half are Peter Stewart
of Sioux City North and Jim Gotto of Western Dubuque. Bubba Hernandez of
Bettendorf will have to face Austin Weisinger of Marion. The bottom half has No. 2 Kyle Larson of West Des Moines Valley
against No. 8 Wade Edgington of Indianola in the first round. Also on
the bottom is Nate Harms of Glenwood, former State champ Adam Perrin of
North Scott and Luke Dremer of Cedar Rapids Kennedy. 130 On the bottom half, it looks like we should have a semifinal between
No. 1 Jordan Rinken of Waverly-Shell Rock and No. 2 Jay Hildreth of
Lewis Central. But Hildreth may have to get past No. 5 freshman Dylan
Blackford of Southeast Polk in the quarters. 135 Chris Avery of Des Moines East against Blake Letney of Pleasant
Valley with the winner facing either No. 6 Gradey Gambrall of Iowa City
West or Duane Richardson of CB Thomas Jefferson. Richardson is ranked
No. 6 at 130. The other quarter bracket has Valentine Flores of Mason
City and Paul Schumaker of Davenport Central. Both have been ranked at
one time this year. Then we have No. 7 Bran Warren of DM North/Hoover
against No. 8 Trent Brown of Oskaloosa. The bottom half has the No. 1 and 2 ranked wrestlers. They would meet
in the quarterfinal round. No. 2 Josh Greiner has to get by No. 5 Jake
Rizzio of Cedar Rapids Prairie and No. 1 Bo Schlosser of Bettendorf has
to get by Devin Becraft of Ames. The other half has No. 9 Tim O'Connell
of Maquoketa and No. 10 Zeb Wahle of Lewis Central.
140 On the top half we have No. 1 Jake Ballweg of Waverly-Shell Rock,
going after his third State title. But he will have to get by Brad
Schwenke of Atlantic first. Also we have unbeaten No. 4 Julian Feikert
of Keokuk and No. 8 Mike Otto of Sioux City East. The winner gets the
winner of No. 5 Luke Swalla of Ames and Kevin Brimeyer of Dubuque
Hempstead. The bottom half has No. 2 and unbeaten Gabriel Moreno of Urbandale
and No. 3 Elijah Sullivan of Lewis Central. They could meet in the
semifinals if they can get through a side that includes No. 7 Garrett
Hathaway of Iowa City West, No. 6 Chase Eggers of Newton and No. 9
Dominic Chase of Bettendorf.
145 On the top we start off with top-ranked Cody Caldwell of
Waverly-Shell Rock against No. 9 Tyler Maxwell of Glenwood. No. 4 Brett
Sams of Oskaloosa faces Colbey Vance of Pleasant Valley. That winner
gets the winner of No. 6 Trevor Duke of Burlington and Sean DeGoey of
Des Moines East. On the bottom half No. 3 Cody Swim of Indianola could face No. 2 Cole
Clarken of Ft. Dodge in the semifinals. Clarken would have to first meet
the winner of No. 7 Rulin Pederson of Sioux City East and the always
dangerous No. 8 Gustavo Martinez of Marshalltown. 152 The bottom half we have returning State champion and No. 2 Michael
Kelly of Cedar Falls. If he gets by Ryan Sheldon of Cedar Rapids Kennedy
he would face the winner of No. 4 Andrew Cartwright of Ft. Madison and
No. 8 Ryan Flagel of Maquoketa. Also on the bottom is No. 6 Ben Swalla
of Ames.
160 On the bottom half we start right off with No. 4 Thomas Mayberry of
Maquoketa and No. 10 Zach Parson of Cedar Rapids Kennedy. No. 3 Anthony
Walther of Waverly-Shell Rock could face the winner there. The bottom
quarter has No. 2 Spencer BeLieu of Indianola. He could meet No. 7 Beau
Gill of Sioux City North in the quarterfinals. 171 On the top half we have returning finalist and top-ranked Mike Moreno
of Urbandale facing No. 6 A.J. McBroom of Southeast Polk, with the
winner possibly meeting No. 7 Bobby Bradham of Sioux City East. Also for
a possible quarterfinal match would be No. 4 Nate Shaw of Bettendorf and
No. 9 Evan Rethmeier of Newton. The bottom half has a great first-round matchup with No. 8 Derick
Minch of Muscatine and No. 10 David Solis of Iowa City West. The winner
could face No. 2 Walt Gillmor of North Scott. The other possible
quarterfinals matchup would be No. 3 Trey Henderson of Indianola and No.
5 Travis Mallo of Mason City. 189 On the bottom half of this bracket we have No. 4 Brandon Abernathy of
Indianola and No. 7 Eric Rasmussen of Ankeny. The winner likely to get
to the semifinals. The other quarterfinal matchup could possibly be
between two defending State champions. If No. 1 Kyven Gadson of Waterloo
East and third-ranked Evan Knight of Urbandale win their first-round
matches as expected, we will get that match. 215 We start off with No. 7 Grant Riesberg of Dowling Catholic against
No. 10 Ben Nagle of North Scott. That winner could possibly face No. 3
Mickey Pelfrey of Iowa City West. The winner of this could meet No. 1
returning champ Cody Krumwiede of Waverly-Shell Rock in the semifinals.
The lower half of the bracket has No. 3 Brock Haas of Dubuque
Hempstead against No. 8 Jesse South of Urbandale. The winner there
should get to the semifinals against either No. 5 Josh Behrendt of
Davenport Central or No. 2 Josh Lambrecht of Cedar Rapids Prairie.
285 The bottom half pits the number 2 and 3 wrestlers against each other
in the first round. Either No. 3 Colin White of Glenwood or
second-ranked Nolan Proehl of Davenport Central will have a huge
first-day victory. The winner will likely get a shot at No. 6 Thomas
Heidersheit of Ankeny. No. 4 Conner Herman of Cedar Rapids Jefferson
would likely meet No. 5 Joe Scanlon of Johnston in the quarters.
