Class 2A First Round Notebook

By Matt Pfiffner

News and notes from the first round of Class 2A action.

103 - Top-ranked and undefeated Dylan Peters of Denver-Tripoli started one of the favorites in 2A off to a great start with a 30-second pin. The Titans would go 8-1 in the first round, including one stunning upset (see later in notebook).

112 - Gunnar Wolfensperger of Denver-Tripoli rallied from a 7-3 first-period deficit over outstanding freshman Kyle Blocker of East Marshall/GMG.

119 - Second-ranked Jacob Colon of Clear Lake survived a scare against No. 10 Hunter Langley of Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 10-9. In the other quarter on that side, Bradley McDermott of Davenport Assumption scored two near fall points in the final 30 seconds for a 4-2 win over Ryan Matherly of Grinnell.

125 - Third-ranked Tre Rutz of Humboldt held on for a 1-0 victory over freshman Tony Parks of Davenport Assumption.

130 - Top-ranked freshman Jake Marlin of Creston/O-M and No. 4 Tyler Endres of Independence both scored technical fall victories and will meet in Thursday's quarterfinals. Marlin led 15-1 at the end of the first and ended it early in the second.

135 - The stunner of the day...unranked Blake Shedenhelm of Denver-Tripoli scores an 11-9 victory over top-ranked Trevor Hejhal of Osage. No.8 Wil Stetzel of Perry trailed in the third, but sent Tyler Lashbrook of Tri-County (Conrad) to his back for the fall.

140 - Top-ranked Tanner Hiatt of Ballard and No. 2 Seth Noble of Columbus Junction both had falls and appear headed toward a semifinal bout a year after meeting in the finals.

145 - A highly-anticipated bout didn't quit live up to the build-up, as No. 2 Brody Grothus of Davenport Assumption scored early and often and eventually pinned No. 8 Brett Yonkovic of West Delaware in the first period.

152 - Second-ranked Blake Sorenson of Denver-Tripoli scored a takedown in the second and an escape in the third for a 3-2 victory over No. 4 Ryan Valline of East Marshall.

160 - In a battle of 2009 place finishers, No. 7 Kyle Lux of South Tama had little trouble with third-ranked Will Hansen of Waterloo Columbus, 11-4. Kyle Walker of Algona scored a takedown in overtime for a 5-3 win over Taylor Witzel of AGH/SC.

171 - It looked like Drew Cox of Clear Creek-Amana was on his way to a win in the ultimate tiebreaker over No. 8 Trevor Pisney of Crestwood, but Pisney scored a reversal with two seconds left for the 9-7 win. Top-ranked Brock Weatherman had little trouble with No. 4 Noah Pickard of North Polk, scoring the fall in just 1:17. No. 3 Ryan Rozeboom of SB-L scored a fall late in the third after trailing No. 6 Seth Esaias of Red Oak much of the match.

189 - No. 6 Jacob Morris of Emmetsburg scored the first takedown against No. 7 Jack Manning of Woodward-Granger and held on for a tough 4-3 win. No. 1 Sam Upah of East Marshall/GMG and No. 2 Trevor Voelker of Dallas Center-Grimes both scored falls on their way to a possible semifinal showdown.

215 - No. 5 Cole Jackson of Gilbert handled second-ranked Marcus Streit of Harlan, 12-3, and will face top-ranked and undefeated James Morris of Solon next. Third-ranked Logan Johnson of Algona scored the only first-round win over a Denver-Tripoli wrestler, with an 8-2 victory over Tanner Klein.

285 - No. 2 Tyler Swope of Davenport Assumption and No. 3 Austin Blythe of Williamsburg will meet once again this season in the quarters, after both recorded first-round falls.
