Class 2A First Round Notebook

News and notes from the first round of Class 2A action.
103 - Top-ranked and undefeated Dylan Peters of Denver-Tripoli started
one of the favorites in 2A off to a great start with a 30-second pin.
The Titans would go 8-1 in the first round, including one stunning upset
(see later in notebook).
112 - Gunnar Wolfensperger of Denver-Tripoli rallied from a 7-3
first-period deficit over outstanding freshman Kyle Blocker of East
Marshall/GMG.
119 - Second-ranked Jacob Colon of Clear Lake survived a scare against
No. 10 Hunter Langley of Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 10-9. In the other
quarter on that side, Bradley McDermott of Davenport Assumption scored
two near fall points in the final 30 seconds for a 4-2 win over Ryan
Matherly of Grinnell.
125 - Third-ranked Tre Rutz of Humboldt held on for a 1-0 victory over
freshman Tony Parks of Davenport Assumption.
130 - Top-ranked freshman Jake Marlin of Creston/O-M and No. 4 Tyler
Endres of Independence both scored technical fall victories and will
meet in Thursday's quarterfinals. Marlin led 15-1 at the end of the
first and ended it early in the second.
135 - The stunner of the day...unranked Blake Shedenhelm of
Denver-Tripoli scores an 11-9 victory over top-ranked Trevor Hejhal of
Osage. No.8 Wil Stetzel of Perry trailed in the third, but sent Tyler
Lashbrook of Tri-County (Conrad) to his back for the fall.
140 - Top-ranked Tanner Hiatt of Ballard and No. 2 Seth Noble of
Columbus Junction both had falls and appear headed toward a semifinal
bout a year after meeting in the finals.
145 - A highly-anticipated bout didn't quit live up to the build-up, as
No. 2 Brody Grothus of Davenport Assumption scored early and often and
eventually pinned No. 8 Brett Yonkovic of West Delaware in the first
period.
152 - Second-ranked Blake Sorenson of Denver-Tripoli scored a takedown
in the second and an escape in the third for a 3-2 victory over No. 4
Ryan Valline of East Marshall.
160 - In a battle of 2009 place finishers, No. 7 Kyle Lux of South Tama
had little trouble with third-ranked Will Hansen of Waterloo Columbus,
11-4. Kyle Walker of Algona scored a takedown in overtime for a 5-3 win
over Taylor Witzel of AGH/SC.
171 - It looked like Drew Cox of Clear Creek-Amana was on his way to a
win in the ultimate tiebreaker over No. 8 Trevor Pisney of Crestwood,
but Pisney scored a reversal with two seconds left for the 9-7 win.
Top-ranked Brock Weatherman had little trouble with No. 4 Noah Pickard
of North Polk, scoring the fall in just 1:17. No. 3 Ryan Rozeboom of
SB-L scored a fall late in the third after trailing No. 6 Seth Esaias of
Red Oak much of the match.
189 - No. 6 Jacob Morris of Emmetsburg scored the first takedown against
No. 7 Jack Manning of Woodward-Granger and held on for a tough 4-3 win.
No. 1 Sam Upah of East Marshall/GMG and No. 2 Trevor Voelker of Dallas
Center-Grimes both scored falls on their way to a possible semifinal
showdown.
215 - No. 5 Cole Jackson of Gilbert handled second-ranked Marcus Streit
of Harlan, 12-3, and will face top-ranked and undefeated James Morris of
Solon next. Third-ranked Logan Johnson of Algona scored the only
first-round win over a Denver-Tripoli wrestler, with an 8-2 victory over
Tanner Klein.
285 - No. 2 Tyler Swope of Davenport Assumption and No. 3 Austin Blythe
of Williamsburg will meet once again this season in the quarters, after
both recorded first-round falls.
