Class 2A Quarterfinals Notebook

News and notes from the quarterfinal round of Class 2A action.

103 - Top-ranked Dylan Peters of Denver-Tripoli continues to look unstoppable, with his second fall in under a minute. No. 8 freshman Colton McCrystal of Sergeant Bluff-Luton turned No. 2 Pryce Creighton of Dallas Center-Grimes twice in the third period for a 5-2 win.

112 - Gunnar Wolfensperger of Denver-Tripoli won his second one-point match of the tournament, this time 5-4 in overtime against Jesse Vercande of Williamsburg.

119 - No. 2 Jacob Colon of Clear Lake and top-ranked freshman Brandon Sorenson of Denver-Tripoli will meet in the semifinals. Colon pinned No. 3 Bradley McDermott of Davenport Assumption and Sorenson earned a major decision.

125 - Top-ranked Levi Wolfensperger collected his second fall of the tournament, as did No. 2 Darius Dutcher of OA-BCIG and No. 4 Tyler Patten of Webster City.

130 - No. 1 freshman phenom Jake Marlin of Creston/O-M broke open a tight match with a flurry of back points in the third period in a 13-6 victory over fourth-ranked Tyler Endres of Independence. It was the first loss of the season for Endres. In a battle of former State champs, No. 5 Tanner Schmidt of Charles City defeated No. 3 Dakota Bauer of Ballard, 6-2.

135 - No. 7 Kyler Risher of Centerville scored the lone point in a 1-0 victory over Blaze Shedenhelm of Denver-Tripoli, who defeated the top-ranked wrestler yesterday.

140 - The match everyone wants to see will happen Friday in the semifinals. No. 1 Tanner Hiatt of Ballard and No. 2 Seth Noble of Columbus Junction will meet in a rematch of the 140-pound title bout from last season, won in the closing seconds by Hiatt.

145 - No. 5 Aaron Sorenson of Forest City trailed 2-0 in the second period when he locked up a cradle and pinned No. 2 Brody Grothus of Davenport Assumption.

152 - No. 3 Taylor Berger of Carroll continues to impress, as he recorded a second consecutive technical fall, this time 16-1 over Taimon Wehr of Harlan.

160 - Top-ranked Landon Williams of Davenport Assumption scored the final eight points of the match in a 10-2 win over No. 4 Joe Naig of Emmetsburg. Unranked Kyle Walker of Algona stunned No. 7 Kyle Lux of South Tama with a pin midway through the third period.

171 - No. 5 Kane Seeley of Perry scored a takedown at the buzzer for a 7-6 victory over unranked Josh Haug of Mount Vernon.

189 - No. 2 Trevor Voelker of Dallas Center-Grimes held off a last-second upset bid by No. 4 Blaize Cabell of Independence, 5-4. No.8 Chaps Wilcke of OA-BCIG scored in overtime for a 7-5 win over Spencer Lueders of NE Goose Lake. No. 3 Stuart Holloway earned a wild 11-9 win over No. 6 Jacob Morris of Emmetsburg.

215 - Top-ranked James Morris of Solon scored a pair of takedowns on his way to a slim 6-5 victory over Cole Jackson of Gilbert, son of Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson.

285 - Third-ranked and defending champ Austin Blythe of Williamsburg scored a takedown and pair of back points in the closing seconds for a 6-2 win over No. 2 Tyler Swope of Davenport Assumption. Swope had defeated Blythe twice this season. Top-ranked Adam Praska of Crestwood scored another quick takedown on his way to the semis.
