103 - No. 1 Colby Knight, Urbandale (37-0) vs. No. 5 Drake
Swarm, Bettendorf (29-7)
A win keeps Swarm on the winners side. If Bettendorf is in the hunt for
a team title they need to stay on the front side at as many weights as
possible. But it will be tough against the undefeated Knight.
119 - No. 7 Tyler Feller, Lewis Central (30-4) vs. No. 8 Josh
Perkins, Atlantic (40-3)
A re-match of the Hawkeye 10 Conference finals, won by Feller. Both have
had outstanding seasons and a win here against a league rival would be a
big boost for either junior.
130 - No. 4 Demetrious Taylor, Waterloo East (22-3) vs. No. 9
David Lewis, Bettendorf (28-6)
Another big first-round match for Bettendorf. Taylor lost to top-ranked
Jordan Rinken of Waverly-Shell Rock at Districts to set up this exciting
first-rounder.
135 – No. 2 Josh Greiner, Ottumwa (42-0) vs. No. 5 Jake
Rizzio, Cedar Rapids Prairie (16-4)
A win could put that wrestler in a match with No. 2 Bo Schlosser of
Bettendorf. Both have placed at State before, Greiner as a freshman at
Centerville in 2A and Rizzio last season.
140 – No. 4 Julian Feikart, Keokuk (38-0) vs. No. 8 Mike
Otto, Sioux City East (43-6)
Feikart puts his undefeated mark on the line, with the winner hoping for
a semifinal match with undefeated two-time State champ Jake Ballweg of
Waverly-Shell Rock.
152 - No.1 Justin Koethe, Iowa City West (26-1) vs. No. 5
Peyton Wagner, Cedar Rapids Prairie (25-6)
Wagner was beaten in the Mississippi Valley Conference tourney, so he
hasn’t met Koethe this year. Koethe placed fourth at 135 as a freshman
and is hoping for a quarterfinal date with No. 3 Joey Trizzino of
Bettendorf in what would be a huge battle in the team race.
152 – No. 8 Ryan
Flagel, Maquoketa (33-4) vs. No. 4 Andrew Cartwright, Ft. Madison (32-5)
A top match-up in a very balanced weight class. The winner of this bout
likely gets to take their shot at returning State champ Michael Kelly of
Cedar Falls.
160 – No. 5 Kyle Putnam, Lewis Central (35-9) vs. No. 6 Nik
Pappas, West Des Moines Valley (29-6)
One of the better first-round match between top 10 kids. The winner will
be favored to reach the semifinals out of this quarter.
189 - No. 6 A.J. Arrendell, Pella (30-4) vs. No. 8 Jared
Bartel, Mason City (33-6)
Another top 10 match-up. Arrendell gets his last shot at State against a
very talented sophomore. Winner has a solid shot at making it out to
semifinals.
285 – No. 2 Nolan Proehl, Davenport West (27-4) vs. No. 3
Colin White, Glenwood (34-3)
Proehl lost to No. 1 Brody Berrie of Bettendorf in the District finals
and starts State off with third-ranked White. White placed sixth at
State last season, so he has the experience advantage.
