In case you missed it...
The week in review in Iowa high school wrestling

BY MATT PFIFFNER

It's been a few weeks since I've found the time to do this feature, but here is a quick update of some of the results you may have missed in high school wrestling from the past week. I will try to do one of these once a week through the rest of the season, until State.

  • Thursday night in Greenfield, the second and third-ranked 103-pounders in Class 1A met for the second time this season. In the first meeting, No. 2 Klint Stapes of Interstate 35 pinned No. 3 Tyler Hatch of Nodaway Valley, when Hatch suffered a shoulder injury. They were scheduled to meet the first Saturday after the break at the Winterset Tournament, but the then-undefeated Stapes was upset in the semifinals. So fans had to wait until Thursday, when Stapes earned a 5-0 decision to take a 2-0 lead in the season series.

  • Monday night in a Class 3A dual, Mason City spanked Ames, 60-6. One of the Mohawk victories came at 189, where unranked Will Worthy handed third-ranked Taylor Knight of Ames a 7-6 loss.

  • Class 3A powers Waverly-Shell Rock and Iowa City West turned in impressive performances once again on Saturday. The top-ranked G-Hawks won the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawk Invitational by 99 points over Fort Dodge, despite wrestling without three starters. W-SR crowned six champs. Iowa City West placed second at the tough Geneseo Tournament in Illinois with five individual champs.

  • Logan-Magnolia pinned a pair of western Iowa foes by a combined 148-0 last week in a triangular. The Panthers defeated AHST, 69-0, and Treynor, 79-0.

  • Alec Hoffman, a senior at Davenport North, became a rare four-time champion in the Mississippi Athletic Conference on Saturday when he recorded an 18-1 technical fall against Bettendorf’s Mike White in the final at 140 pounds.

  • Top-ranked 1A 130-pounder Jordan Westfall of Highland (Riverside) barely remained undefeated on the season at the Hudson Invitational Saturday. Westfall scored a reversal with five seconds left in the match for a 6-5 victory over fourth-ranked Cody Johnston of Nashua-Plainfield.

  • A pair of highly-ranked individuals met in the 112-pound finals at the Dave Wagner Invitational in Ackley on Saturday. Class 2A No. 4 Brandon Helgeson of Clarion-Goldfield dominated from the very start and ended up pinning 1A No. 2 Derric Thomas of Mason City Newman.

  • There were some very good finals matches at the Centerville Big Red Invitational on Saturday. At 130, Class 2A No. 2 Quin Leith of Creston edged 3A's No. 3 Nick Moon of Knoxville, 3-2 in the title bout. In the 135-pound finals, 2A's second-ranked Seth Noble of Columbus Junction topped No. 1 Bret Kautz of Creston, 7-6. At 140, 2A's No. 7 Trent Tucker of Creston scored a 9-7 win over Colton Smith of Iowa City High, who is ranked second at 135 in 3A. Class 2A top-ranked 160-pounder Kalab Evans of Creston remained undefeated with a 10-5 win over 3A No. 3 Bryce Skaggs of Newton. At 215, a pair of ranked 2A grapplers met in the finals. No. 4 Bryant Hummel of Clarinda scored a 1-0 victory over No. 5 Wallace Carter of Centerville. And at heavyweight, Class 3A No. 4 James Ferentz of Iowa City High defeated 2A No. 2 Avery Fuhs of Chariton, 3-1.

  • There were also some rated battles in the Twin Lakes Conference Tournament on Saturday. At 119, 1A top-ranked Travis Taylor of Prairie Valley pinned 1A No. 7 Keegan Barkley of Manson-NW Webster. At 125, freshman phenom Skyler Rice of Manson NW Webster, ranked fifth in 1A, defeated 1A No. 8 Sam Halverson of Twin River Valley, 8-2. 135 may have been the toughest weight class there, with 1A No. 10 Michael Jensen of Graettinger-Terril winning 5-3 in the finals over 1A No. 8 Zach Beekman of Pocahontas Area. 1A top-ranked 140-pounder Marshall Koethe of TRV won 7-1 over 2A No. 9 Kanne Kraft of Rockwell City-Lytton/Southern Cal. And at 189, 1A top-ranked Jake Hoffman of Graettinger-Terril won 5-2 against 2A No. 5 Kelan Richardson of RCL/SCAL.

  • Class 3A fifth-ranked 130-pounder Julian Fiekert of Keokuk had an outstanding day at the Marion Tournament Saturday. He defeated Class 1A No. 2 Chris LeClere of North Linn in the semifinals and finished off the day with a pin in the finals against 2A No. 6 Nick Rutherford of Grinnell.

  • Also at Marion, Class 2A second-ranked 215-pounder Holden Blythe of Williamsburg won the crown with a 5-0 victory over 1A No. 7 Alex Burkel of North Linn.
