2007 State Tournament Coverage

Class 3A Weight-by-Weight Preview

BY WYATT SCHULTZ

103 - (9 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - Coming out of the top half of the bracket is No. 3 Stephen Hernandez of West Des Moines Valley with a quarterfinal match with Nick Sand of Waterloo West or No. 4 Wes Shetterly of Linn-Mar and a possible semifinal match with No. 8 Landon Williams of North Scott

Bottom half - Top-ranked Cruse Aarhus won’t cruise to the finals. He’ll have to face the winner of No. 9 Chris Avery of Des Moines Lincoln and No. 6 Joey Jerkovich of CB Lewis Central in a quarterfinal match. The other part of the bracket isn’t any easier with No. 10 Kory Kistner of Sioux City East vs. tough freshman Ethan Cooper of Keokuk with that winner meeting the winner of No. 2 Johnny Coleman of Des Moines East and Jim Gotto of Western Dubuque.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Stephen Hernandez vs. Cruse Aarhus; JT - Hernandez vs. Aarhus; MP - Wes Shetterly vs. Aarhus

112 - (9 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - Top-ranked and undefeated freshman Jake Ballweg of Waverly-Shell Rock is on the top half with No. 4 Kaleb Brown of Oskaloosa and third-ranked Brandon Briggs of Keokuk. Brown and Briggs should meet in a very good quarterfinal bout, with the winner getting Ballweg in the semis.

Bottom half - The bottom half features a first round match-up between No. 7 Alex Gonzales of Clinton and sixth-ranked Nathan Vaske of West Delaware. Indianola’s second-ranked freshman Cody Swim should meet the winner. Swim would be an undefeated rookie like Ballweg, if not for a loss due to a slam.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Jake Ballweg vs. Cody Swim; JT - Ballweg vs. Swim; MP - Ballweg vs. Swim

119 - (All 10 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - Second-ranked Matt McDonough of Linn-Mar, the 2006 State champ at 112, vs. No. 9 Tommy Mirocha of Davenport Central in a first round match-up. With the winner taking on the winner of No. 6 Bret Baumbach of Lewis Central or No. 7 Nate Williams of DM East in the quarters.

Bottom half - This half of the bracket has a first round meeting between two State and National champions - No. 3 Tyler Clark of Bettendorf (Illinois State champ last season) and top-ranked Dylan Carew of Iowa City West (103 pound champ last year as a freshman). A big match as far as the team race is concerned right off the bat. The winner is lucky enough to take on the winner of No. 8 Brett Sams of Oskaloosa and 10th-rated Tyler Grask of Dowling Catholic. With the losers also meeting with one of these four going home 0-2. Also on this side is No. 4 Mike Miille of Waverly-Shell Rock and No. 5 Travis Evans of Ankeny.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Matt McDonough vs. Dylan Carew; JT - McDonough vs. Tyler Clark; MP - McDonough vs. Carew

125 - (8 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - Undefeated top-ranked junior Nate Moore of IC West has been dominant all year, including winning at the Dvorak Memorial and the Geneseo tournaments. Can he win his first title after taking second his first two seasons? No. 6 Nick Moon of Knoxville, No. 7 Seth Cooper of Keokuk and Chad Pendley of Clinton are also on Moore's side of the bracket.

Bottom half - Fourth-ranked Cole Clarken of Ft. Dodge has a first round match with Alex Lindquist of CR Washington. That winner will meet the winner of No. 3 Matt Kittleson of Waverly-Shell Rock and ninth-rated Max Mayfield of Davenport Central. Second-ranked Chad Lowman of DM Roosevelt meets Anthony Baccam of Marshalltown in another of those excellent first round matches.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Nate Moore vs. Chad Lowman; JT - Moore vs. Lowman; MP - Moore vs. Lowman

130 - (6 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - No. 6 Colby Tofanelli of DM Lincoln and No. 5 Isaiah Smith of Newton look to meet in a quarterfinal match. Tofanelli will have to get by Mike White of Bettendorf and Smith will have to get by ninth-ranked James Colwell of CR Xavier. The other quarter appears wide open, with all four wrestlers having 10 or more losses on the season.

Bottom half - On the bottom half of the bracket, top-ranked Mark Ballweg of Waverly-Shell Rock could meet No. 2 Micah Sheffield of Sioux City North in a quarterfinal match with undefeated freshman and second-ranked Nick Moore of Iowa City West waiting for the winner in the semifinals. Ballweg is looking for his second title in three years, and ironically, would have to get through another Moore from Iowa City West to get it.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Isaiah Smith vs. Mark Ballweg; JT - Smith vs. Ballweg; MP - Colby Tofanelli vs. Ballweg

135 - (7 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - Unbeaten second-ranked Alec Hoffman of Davenport North has a tough first round match in Chris Gansen of Western Dubuque with No. 9 Dusty McAninch of DM East waiting in the wings. Also in this half of the bracket is No. 3 Colton Smith of Iowa City City High and fifth-rated Ryan Halverson of Ft. Dodge. Smith has a solid test in the first round against No. 10 Robert Renzi of West Des Moines Valley.

Bottom half - No. 1 Derek St. John of IC West heads the bottom half of this bracket. Also in this half is Josh South of Johnston and No. 4 Tyler Hardin of CR Prairie. James Tudor of Newton could also be a factor here.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Alec Hoffman vs. Derek St. John; JT - Hoffman vs. St. John; MP - Hoffman vs. St. John

140 - (7 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - Don’t overlook anyone here. No. 5 Daniel Higgins of Storm Lake, seventh-rated Nolan Hagerty of Muscatine, third-rated Logan Edgington of Indianola and No. 6 Tyler Carew of IC West are here. Higgins and Hagerty could meet in one quarter, with a possible Edgington/Carew meeting in the other quarter.

Bottom half - The only No. 1 vs. No. 2 first-round match in the entire State Tournament occurs here. Top-ranked Zach McCool of West Delaware vs. No. 2 John Nicholson of DM Roosevelt. This could very well have been a finals match. McCool was runner-up to Centerville's T.J. Sebolt in 2A last season and Nicholson is here because of a close loss at Districts to Edgington. Also on this side are No. 10 Cal Beatty of CR Prairie and unranked but very tough Dallas Boisen of Spencer.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Logan Edgington vs. Zach McCool; JT - Edgington vs. McCool; MP - Edgington vs. McCool

145 - (All 10 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - Top ranked freshman Michael Moreno will meet third ranked Daniel Twito of Cedar Falls, only if Moreno can get by Justin Brand of Indianola in his first-ever State match. It won’t get any easier as he’ll possibly have Matt Briggs of Keokuk or No. 4 Stew Gillmor of North Scott in the semis.

Bottom half - This will be another of those great brackets. With the No. 2, 5, 6, 7,8, and 9 ranked wrestlers on this half it could be wide open. No. 5 Blaze Gill of Sioux City North vs. Chad Klees of Burlington. No. 2 Jacob Groth of Marshalltown vs. No. 9 Noah Southworth of Western Dubuque. No. 6 Kyle McDowell of Johnston vs. Lucas Zachery of Dowling Catholic. No. 8 Michael Pederson of CR Xavier vs. seventh-ranked Khyle Cox of Waverly-Shell Rock. All first round matches with the winners taking on each other.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Michael Moreno vs. Blaze Gill; JT - Daniel Twito vs. Kyle McDowell; MP - Moreno vs. Gill

152 - (All 10 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - Top-ranked Jason Nelson of Linn-Mar will have no easy task if he wants to make the finals again. First he’ll have to get by Matt Kuster of Boone. Then the winner of No. 9 Aidan Brock of Cedar Falls and Mitch Gansen of Western Dubuque. The other quarter bracket has fifth-rated freshman Evan Knight of Urbandale. No. 4 Bryce Skaggs of Newton will be waiting for him in the quarterfinal match if he can get by Cotrell Bailey of SC West.

Bottom half - Two unbeaten wrestlers on this half of the bracket. Sixth-ranked Eric Reese (11-0) of Johnston is coming back from injury and No. 2 Ryan Helenthal (39-0) of Keokuk. They could meet in the semis. No. 3 Brooks Smith of North Scott won’t let them have an easy task to the finals. Smith could meet Reese in the quarters.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Jason Nelson vs. Ryan Helenthal; JT - Nelson vs. Helenthal; MP - Nelson vs. Helenthal

160 - (8 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - Top rated and 49-0 Robert Kellogg won’t an easy road to the finals with a first round match against No. 3 Adam Herrick of Charles City. No. 7 Alec Epkes of North Scott is then waiting for the winner in the quarterfinal match. Don’t count out fifth-rated Jeremy Garvin of Iowa City West.

Bottom half - No. 2 Billy Lewis of Bettendorf will have David Drahozal of CR Xavier in the first round. Jeff Ragan of SE Polk could have a quarterfinal match-up with the winner. No. 4 B.J. Brooks of Waterloo West and eighth-ranked Jason Truschcheff of Fort Dodge meet in the first round. This weight is another that could possibly have the top 4 ranked wrestlers in the semifinals.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Robert Kellogg vs. Billy Lewis; JT - Kellogg vs. Lewis; MP - Kellogg vs. Lewis

171 - (8 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - A No. 1 Grant Grambrall of Iowa City West vs. No. 2 Dylan Wrage of Waverly-Shell Rock  finals match? A Grant Gambrall of IC West and a No. 3 Jesse Swanson of Knoxville semifinal? Could be. Swanson will have to get by No. 4 Byron Tate of Clinton first in what would be a great quarterfinal.

Bottom half - Wrage is the man to beat on the lower half of the bracket. No. 5 Derek Knightster of CB Lewis Central could meet the winner of the No. 8 Kyle Thrap of Norwalk vs. seventh-ranked Ethan Bass of SEP first round bout.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Grant Gambrall vs. Dylan Wrage; JT - Gambrall vs. Wrage; MP - Gambrall vs. Wrage

189 - (7 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - No. 1 and No. 2, Jimmy Waters of Lewis Central and Brodie Ambrose of North Scott could meet in the quarterfinal round. The other quarterfinal match could be No. 5 Taylor Knight of Ames and No. 6 Jordy Ammons of Knoxville. If Waters wins his third State title in a row, he would tie former CB Lewis Central great Brandon Mason for second in all-time wins.

Bottom half - No. 7 Anthony Losasso of Bettendorf could meet No. 3 Alex Grafft of CR Washington in the quarterfinal match. The other part of the bracket features Lee Averhoff of Waverly-Shell Rock and No. 8 Ryan Bell of SC East.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Jimmy Waters vs. Alex Grafft; JT - Waters vs. Grafft; MP - Waters vs. Anthony Losasso

215 - (9 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - No.2 Bojan Djukic of DM East and third-ranked Matt Sixta of WDM Valley have been battling all year. That could very well be a semifinal match if Djukic doesn’t overlook No. 8 Steve Broghammer of West Delaware or the No. 9 Gavin Whittaker of Muscatine vs. No. 10 Garrett Hamilton winner in the quarters.

Bottom half - The bottom half of the bracket features a first round match-up of No. 1 Eric Thompson of Waverly-Shell Rock and No. 5 Brooks Skaggs of Newton. Also in that bracket is sixth-ranked Mickey Sprague of CR Prairie along with No. 4 Chad Onstot of Indianola.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Matt Sixta vs. Eric Thompson; JT - Sixta vs. Thompson; MP - Bojan Djukic vs. Thompson

285 - (6 ranked wrestlers made the State Tournament)
Top half - This top half features No. 1 Jordan Johnson of Bettendorf. In the bottom quarter of that bracket is No. 3 Alex Petersen of Indianola vs. Clark Fisher of Waverly-Shell Rock. Fifth-rated Andy Jackman of Linn-Mar takes on No. 10 Nate Stoffel of Dubuque Hempstead in a rematch of the Mississippi Valley Conference finals won by Jackman. These two winners will go at it with the chance to take on Johnson in the semis.

Bottom half - With No. 2 Ben Boothby on the bottom it could be a No. 1 vs. No. 2 finals. Casey Muessigmann of Spencer and Adam McElderry of WDM Valley meet in a good first round bout.

Predicament's Finals Predictions: WS - Jordan Johnson vs. Ben Boothby; JT - Johnson vs. Boothby; MP - Johnson vs. Boothby
