Nate Moore (blue) def. Matt McDonough, 3-3, 4-0, 3-0
These two 2007 Iowa State Champions met twice last summer in Fargo, N.D. for
National titles. Moore won the Greco-Roman crown in Cadet action, while
McDonough earned revenge later in the week with the freestyle gold. Other
than a headlock by McDonough in the first period, Moore pretty much had his
way in this re-match.
1st Period: McDonough jumped out to a quick start when
he hit a headlock on the edge of the mat for a 3-0 lead. He also used that
move in Fargo on his way to beating Moore for the freestyle National title.
Moore took McDonough down later in the period and used a turn to close to
within 3-2. Moore scored another takedown moments later to knot the score at
3-3. McDonough was able to hold off Moore in the final seconds and won the
first period base on his three-point move.
2nd Period: Moore used a carry for a takedown with exposure
to jump on top by a 3-0 score. He was able to slip a headlock attempt by
McDonough later in the period for another takedown and 4-0 win.
3rd Period: Moore scored early in the period with a nice
single leg takedown. McDonough got in deep on his own single leg attempt
later in the period, but could not finish the move. Moore scored a counter
takedown with 20 seconds left in the period for a 2-0 lead and added another
takedown in the final seconds to take the period, 3-0, to win the match.
