A quick breakdown of Thursday

for Iowa and Northern Iowa.
Championship Quarterfinals

Magnani struck first with a late first period takedown, but gave up a
last-second reversal to make it 2-2. Magnani earned an escape and penalty

The two headed into overtime tied at 1-1 and Castillo scored a quick
takedown for the 3-1 upset.
133
#5 Dan Dennis (Iowa) vs. #4 Andrae Hernandez (Indiana)
Hernandez jumped on top with a takedown a two-point tilt for a 4-0 lead at
the end of the first period. Dennis scored a pair of takedowns in the
second to close to within 7-4 and appeared to have the momentum, but
Hernandez rode the Hawkeye the entire third period for the 7-4 win.
#7 Jesse Sundell (Iowa State)
vs. #2 Jason Borrelli (Central Michigan)
Sundell trailed 6-2 in the third period, but hit a headlock for a reversal
and three nearfall points for a 7-6 lead. Borrelli couldn't escape in the
final minute and Sundell pulled off the big upset for a 7-6 victory.
141
#1 Nate Gallick (Iowa State) vs. #8 Dustin Hinschberger (Wartburg)
Not near as close as the first time, when Gallick won in overtime. He
dominated from the start on his feet and on the mat and handed the
two-time NCAA Div. III National champ an 8-2 loss.
#7 C.J. Ettelson (Northern
Iowa) vs. #2 Andy Simmons (Michigan State)
Simmons scored a takedown in the first period and reversals in the second
and third for the 6-0 workmanlike victory.
149
#1 Cliff Moore (Hawk TC) vs. #8 Anthony Baza (Cal St. Bakersfield)
Moore continued his impressive run through the 149-pound bracket with an
easy 15-5 major decision.
157
#2 Joe Johnston (Iowa) vs. #7 Chris Bitetto (Northern Iowa)
Johnston struggled with Bitetto in the dual, but not tonight. After a
scoreless first period, Johnston struck for five takedowns in the final
two periods for an 11-5 victory.
165
#1 Travis Paulson (Iowa State) vs. Johnny Galloway (Northern Illinois and
former Iowa City High)
In a battle between former standout Class 3A Iowa high school wrestlers,
Paulson scored an escape and a late takedown in the second period and rode
Galloway the entire third for a 3-0 win.
#3 Nick Baima (Northern Iowa)
vs. Beau Tresemer (Air Force)
Baima escaped in the second round with a 1-0 win, but didn't sweat as much
tonight. He scored a takedown and two nearfall points with a cradle in the
first period and led 8-2 midway through the second period, on his way to a
13-6 victory and a berth in the semifinals.
174
#2 Mark Perry (Iowa) vs. #7 Kenny Robertson (Eastern Illinois)
These two got involved in a wild scramble right off the whistle and it
finally ended with Perry on top with a cradle locked up. After getting
settled in, Perry earned the fall in 1:31.
184
#2 Kurt Backes (Iowa State) vs. Jason Lulloff (UW LaCrosse)
Backes led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 3-1 heading into the
third. A Lulloff escape made it 3-2, but Backes put the match away with a
late takedown. Lulloff earned an escape and questionable stalling point,
to make it a 5-4 final.
197
Andrew Anderson (Northern Iowa) vs. #1 Wynn Michalak (Central Michigan)
Anderson trailed early and then was caught on his back to lose by fall.
285

Both wrestlers earned escapes in regulation and they went scoreless on
their feet to head into the tiebreaker periods tied 1-1. Fields rode Allen
out in the first tiebreaker and escaped for the 2-1 victory seconds later.
