Standel Publishing recently published and released NearFall: Book One –The Adventures and Matt and Mike.  This is a wrestling themed, coming of age novel for kids and teens.  The setting for the book is a small town in Iowa.  The author, Joe Reasbeck, wrestled at the University of Minnesota and trained for the 1996 Olympics in Greco Roman wrestling.  The novel, introduces the reader to the world of wrestling, and is geared toward ages 10 to 17, but anyone who has ever wrestled will truly enjoy this read.   

This release is a departure from the business related books Standel has historically published. Questioned on the leap into fiction for kids and teens, Guy Baker, the President and founder of Standel responded, “We feel NearFall meets a need in the young reader market.  Joe pitched us on the necessity for this type of book and after taking a hard look at it, we agreed.  We have now come to believe wrestling is on the verge of becoming a large growth sport and we wanted to participate.  Nearfall has already proven to be extremely popular.”

Reasbeck added, “Wrestling needs more entertainment options.  We need to employ all forms of media to promote our great sport to kids. NearFall is a series following the careers of two young wrestlers. It is slated to be a four book progression of the story.  NearFall: Book One introduces us to Matt and Mike Dean as they begin their journey into the community of wrestling.  Along the way, wrestling helps them deal with peer pressure, bullies, family difficulties and other challenges typical of growing up and fitting in.  Through it all wrestling provides a solution and outlet for their youthful energy and missteps.  If you love wrestling, you’re going to love this book.

While the appeal to the wrestling community is obvious, Baker believes NearFall will resonate with kids from all walks of life.  “This book is based on wrestling, but the novel touches on topical issues brought to life in a very real way--it will appeal to kids everywhere.  We are hoping kids and teens of all backgrounds will benefit from NearFall.  In doing so, we might also contribute to grow the popularity of wrestling.”  Reasbeck added, “To make a contribution to the sport that has given me so much, would really be gratifying.”
