Iowa sophomores well represented in
InterMat's season-ending rankings

BY MATT PFIFFNER

InterMat recently released it's top 12 high school sophomore rankings and several Iowans were honored on the list, including Sophomore National Wrestler of the Year Jay Borschel of Linn-Mar.

Iowa's sophomore class, considered to be one of the strongest Iowa has seen in some time, had 24 individuals selected in the top 12 or honorable mention selections by InterMat.

Borschel, a two-time State champ, was tabbed the top sophomore in the nation at a very loaded 125-pound weight class, which included such stars as Dustin Schlatter of Ohio (the runner-up for Wrestler of the Year), Richard Fessler of Apple Valley and another Iowan - Kyle Anson of Iowa City High. Borschel defeated Anson twice this season, including a semifinal match at State in Class 3A, as both were looking for their second State title in as many seasons.

One other Iowa wrestler, two-time state champ Daniel LeClere of North Linn (130), was recognized as the top sophomore wrestler at his weight. Mitch Mueller of Cedar Rapids Kennedy (119) and Ryan Morningstar of Lisbon (140) were tabbed the second-best in the nation at their respective weights.

Later this week, InterMat (www.intermatwrestle.com) will release it's rankings for the junior and senior classes and it will wrap up with InterMat's all-class rankings, where the best freshmen, sophomores, junior and seniors are ranked together.
