Statesmen wrestling announces large group of signees for 2007-2008
Oskaloosa, Iowa--William Penn University
wrestling coach Gary Garvis has announced the signings of numerous
individuals to National Letters of Intent to attend the University in
the fall and compete for the wrestling program.
Penn, who is coming off a season where it lost 15 seniors to
graduation, highlights its recruiting class with Taylor Louie, an
All-American from
West Covina,
Calif.
Louie, a 125-pounder from West Covina HS who is the son of Tim and Karyn
Louie, was a national runner-up at Senior Nationals.
Joining Louie are numerous other individuals who had success at the
regional, state, or national level.
Matthew Bakalars, the son of Jay and Kathryn Bakalars, is a four-time
state placer from Franklin,
Mass.,
where he attended Franklin HS. He reached the finals three times,
including winning the state championship as a junior.
Ryan Burdett, the son of Jeffery and Debbie Burdett, is from
Chattanooga,
Tenn.,
where he attended Notre Dame HS.
Joshua Cohen, the son of Dale Cohen and Lyn Cohen, is from
Edgewater,
Fla.,
where he attended New Smyrna HS. He is transferring to Penn from
NCAA Division I Citadel.
Taylor Fabian, the son of Dr. Yasser and C. Renee Omran, is from
Millersburg,
Ohio,
where he attended
Marine
Military Academy.
He was a state runner-up as a junior.
Chayse Garrison, the son of Michael Garrison and Donna Allen, is from
Mustang, Okla.,
where he attended Mustang HS. He placed third at regionals to
qualify for the state tournament as a senior, but unfortunately fell ill
before state. Garrison competed but did not place at state.
Cade Hasser, the son of Hans Hasser and Shelley Hasser, is from
Lamar,
Colo.,
where he attended Lamar HS. A three-time state qualifier, he
placed fourth at 165 pounds in Class 3A as a senior.
Jeramy Ingle, the son of Scott and Catherine Ingle, is from Hedrick.
He owned a 28-5 record during his senior season.
Matt Kersse, the son of John and Stephanie Kersse, is from
Woodbridge,
Va.,
where he attended Potomac Senior HS. He owned a 52-8 record as a
senior.
Marcus Mayeda, the son of Brian and Diana Mayeda, is from
Salt Lake City,
Utah,
where he attended West HS. A two-time state placer, he finished as
high as third as a senior.
Josh Malott, the son of Everett and Marjorie Malott, is from
Darlington,
Wis.,
where he attended Darlington HS. A two-time state tournament
finalist, he won the title as a senior.
Clark Morgan, Jr., the son of Clark and Gina Morgan, is from
Buena Park,
Calif.,
where he attended Sunny Hills HS. The winner of over 100 prep
matches, he was within one match of the medal round at the NHSCA
Nationals.
Benjamin Martell, the son of Joseph and Margaret Martell, is from
Richardsville,
Va.,
where he attended Manassas Park HS. A two-time state placer, he
took runner-up honors as a senior.
Tony Rayburn is from
Winchester,
Ky.,
where he attended New Smyrna HS.
Karl Spain, the son of Kevin and Danette Spain,
is from Lafayette,
La.,
where he attended Comeaux HS. A two-time state placer, he finished
as high as third as a senior.
Penn, who has three regional titles since joining the NAIA in
2001-2002, has finished no lower than 14th at the national tournament
since the transition. The Statesmen also have 23 All-Americans,
including one national champion, in that time.
