Iowans excel at Northern Plains Regional

Nine cadet wrestlers from the state of Iowa were double finalists at the Northern Plains Regional held June 9-11 in Rochester, MN. Five of those wrestlers won their weight classes in freestyle and Greco-Roman and were crowned double champions.

The five double champs from Iowa were Andrew Long at 91 pounds, Nate Moore at 112, Grant Gambrall at 152, Robert Kellogg at 160 and 215-pounder Eric Thompson.

Long defeated David Thorn of Minnesota 4-1 in the freestyle title match and also finished ahead of Thorn to win the Greco-Roman title.

Moore won by injury default over Kyle Williams of North Dakota to claim the freestyle crown and defeated Williams 11-0 in the Greco-Roman finals.

Gambrall won by a 15-3 technical fall over Zach Pesch of Minnesota in freestyle and won 7-0 over Aidan Brock of Iowa to claim the G-R title.

Kellogg registered a 12-2 technical fall win over Lucas Muckelwitz of Minnesota to take the freestyle title and scored a 13-3 technical fall win in the G-R finals over Josh Ihnen of Iowa.

Thompson won by a 17-5 technical fall over Andy Trembath of Minnesota in the freestyle finals and scored a 10-0 technical fall in the G-R title bout over Tyler Manning of Wisconsin.

The four other double finalists were Matthew McDonough at 105, Derek St. John at 119, 135-pounder Marshall Koethe and Dylan Wrage at 171. St. John and Wrage won the Greco-Roman crowns at their weights, while the other two wrestlers lost both of their title matches.

Iowans were successful in other divisions as well.

Three young men won double titles in the Novice Division.

Jack Hathaway was a double gold medal winner at 65 pounds. He pinned Brett Lunn of Illinois for the Greco-Roman title and scored a 14-1 technical fall over Hunder Weber of Wisconsin for the freestyle crown.

Willie Miklus won a pair of gold medals at 100. He pinned Austen Nottstad of Wisconsin for the freestyle title and pinned Eric Hensel of Minnesota for the G-R crown.

Nate Shaw was a double winner at 120. He scored a 10-0 technical fall over Jordan Gruettner of Wisconsin for the freestyle title and won 5-1 over Gruettner for the G-R gold.

Justin Koethe won the Novice freestyle title at 112, while Bruce McWilliams took the Novice freestyle gold medal at 140. Bradon Sorenson finished second in the Novice G-R competition at 75, as did Creighton Fox in freestyle at 130.

One Iowa wrestler was a double champion in the Schoolboy Division.
Nick Moore defeated Tyler Lehmann of North Dakota for the G-R title and scored a 6-0 win over Logan Einerson of Wisconsin for the freestyle crown.

Other Schoolboy freestyle champs were Jordan Rinken at 75, Jacob Ballweg at 90 and Charlie Janssen at 120. Janssen pinned fellow Iowan Brock Weatherman for the title. Other freestyle runners-up were Michael Kelly at 115 and Alex Scherdteeger at 185.

Kelly did win the Greco-Roman crown at 115, with an 11-3 win over Justin Enderly of Wisconsin. Dylan Carew at 95 also struck Greco-Roman gold, while Rinken at 75 and Joey Trizzino at 125 finished second.

The lone top two place winners from Iowa in the Midget Division came at the same weight in the Greco-Roman competition. Rickey Hernandez defeated Stephen Rambo 6-0 for that title.
