AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team (1-5, 1-3 Big 12) fell to No. 19 Arizona State, 25-14. The Cyclones picked up bonus-point victories from redshirt freshman Markus Simmons (fall), redshirt senior Earl Hall (major decision) and redshirt junior Patrick Downey (major decision).
The Iowa State gymnastics squad also took on the Arizona State gymnastics in Beauty and the Beast. The Cyclones defeated the Sun Devils by a score of 193.850-191.80.
No. 16 Simmons got the night off to a raucous start for the Cyclone faithful in attendance in his 125-pound bout against ASU's Michael Nguyen. The redshirt freshman from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, won an early scramble after Nguyen nearly had the first score of the match. Simmons turned the tables, scoring his own takedown and taking his opponent straight to his back, and locked up the fall at the 1:30 mark in the first period.
At 133 pounds, No. 11 Hall kept the Cyclone momentum going early as he took the mat to face Ted Rico. The redshirt senior was overwhelming throughout the match, including pair of takedowns in the first period to set the tone. The native of Homestead, Florida, then picked up another takedown and a two-point nearfall midway through the second to extend his advantage to 8-3. Hall locked up bonus points with two more takedowns and the riding time point to win by 14-4 major decision.
Following five-straight Sun Devil wins, Patrick Downey took the mat for his first match in nearly six weeks. The junior, coming off a rib injury suffered at the Cyclone Open on Nov. 13, got ISU back in the win column in dominant fashion. With seven takedowns, Downey rolled passed Conner Small by 19-7 major decision.
Match of the Night – 125 pounds
Markus Simmons brought the fans at Hilton Coliseum to their feet before they even had a chance to sit down after the starting lineups. His pin in 1:30 over Josh Kramer was the highlight of the night for the Cyclones.
