ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Thursday morning marked the beginning of the 2017 NCAA Championships for the Iowa State wrestling team (1-12, 1-6 Big 12). Redshirt seniors Earl Hall and Lelund Weatherspoon, and redshirt sophomore Marcus Harrington are all competing this weekend.
Iowa State posted a 1-2 record in the first session, with Weatherspoon picking up a victory at 174 pounds.
All three wrestlers will compete in tonight's second session. Coverage on ESPN and ESPN3 will begin at 6 p.m. CT.
No. 14 Weatherspoon came away with the lone Cyclone victory in the first session. After he and Stanford's Peter Galli traded escapes to begin the second and third periods, the match was tied 1-1 in the third.
With less than 20 seconds on the clock, Weatherspoon's counter offense earned him a go-ahead takedown. He was able to ride out Galli to advance on a 3-1 decision.
At 133 pounds, No. 13 Hall was pitted against Pat D'Arcy of Princeton. Early in the opening period, D'Arcy scored on an attack to take a 2-0 lead. On the takedown, Hall injured his knee.
Hall bounced back to his feet, but after a D'Arcy escape on the restart, Hall trailed 3-0. The 2016 All American's come-back effort was not enough to surmount D'Arcy's lead. Hall was sent to the consolation bracket by 8-1 decision.
Unseeded Harrington and No. 6 Preston Weigel were locked in a 0-0 stalemate in the third period. Weigel chose the top position to begin the final period. Harrington was unable to get to his feet, while Weigel picked up six back points on a pair of turns. The sixth-seeded Cowboy went on to earn a 7-0 decision over Harrington.
