DECORAH, Iowa - The 14th-ranked Coe College wrestling team opened the season Saturday by earning five top-five finishes at the Luther Open.
At 174 pounds, Jake Voss (Ryan, Iowa/West Delaware) finished second in the Elite Bracket. Voss advanced to the finals with three wins, including a fall and major decision before losing by fall in 3:38 to Upper Iowa's Jordan Gundrum. At 197 pounds, Andrew Holladay (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) won a pair of matches to advance to the quarterfinals before losing by fall to Iowa's Jacob Warner. Holladay picked up three wins in the consolation bracket, including his second technical fall of the day, to finish fifth.
In the silver division, Brock Henderson (Coggon, Iowa/North Linn) won a pair of matches, including a 19-1 technical fall to advance to the championship match at 125 pounds. In the finals, he lost by 21-6 technical fall to Wisconsin-La Crosse's Zach Vilarreal. At 143 pounds, Nick Elias (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) finished fourth. Elias won his quarterfinal match after a bye, but lost by fall in the semifinals and third-place match. Josh Gerke (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) advanced to the semifinals at 157 pounds with a major decision and fall over Minnesota State's Neil Clement before dropping a 7-6 decision to Dubuque's Kamen Wilmington. Gerke won by medical forfeit in the third-place match.
The 14th-ranked Kohawks open the dual season on Thursday against 15th-ranked Central at Kohawk Arena. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. A link to live video and results will be available at CoeAthletics.com.
