LA CROSSE, Wis. – Cornell's ninth-ranked 141-pounder Josh Martin (SR/Lombard, Ill.) won all three of his matches as the Rams went 1-2 at the Candlewood Suites Duals Saturday hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
The Rams rallied for a 26-18 victory over Elmhurst in the opening dual. Cornell then fell 37-6 to second-ranked Augsburg and lost 40-3 to 17th-ranked UW-La Crosse.
Cornell (2-2) scored bonus points in four individual wins against Elmhurst, including a key pin by 174-pounder Wylie Allen (SO/Gilberts, Ill.) in 2:31 that gave the Rams a 19-15 advantage. Bryce Oveson (FR/Wilton, Iowa) stretched the lead to 22-15 with a 3-1 decision at 184.
After Elmhurst got within 22-18, Cornell heavyweight Tyler Ortmann (SR/Forsyth, Ill.) clinched the team win with a 12-2 major decision.
Cornell gave up bonus points in six of the bouts against undefeated Augsburg. Martin put Cornell on the board with a 9-2 win over Mike Hayes. Ortmann was a 3-1 victor over Augsburg heavyweight Ethan Hofacker.
Martin accounted for Cornell's lone win over UW-La Crosse, a 6-4 decision over Hayden Schlough. The Ram senior improved his season record to 11-1.
Thomas battled in a 4-1 loss at 149. Ortmann went extra time with Konrad Ernst, falling 6-1 in the first tiebreaker.
Coming up – Cornell is home Friday to wrestle top-ranked Wartburg at 7 p.m. inside the Small Multi-Sport Center.
