The No. 9 Upper Iowa wrestling team sent 23 wrestlers into competition at the BVU Open in Storm Lake, Iowa on Saturday. The open tournament was divided into two sets of Brackets; 15 Peacocks battled in the "A" brackets and 8 were in the "B" brackets.
UIU placed 3rd in the team standings despite probable dual starters like Maleek Williams, Josh Walker, Hunter Slifka, Brock Benitz and Jordan Gundrum. The Peacocks placed seven wrestlers in the "A" brackets and four more in the "B" brackets including a champ. Five UIU grapplers reached the semifinals in the "A" brackets, while three more made the semis in the "B" brackets.
Nick Baumler (197) and Triston Westerlund (285) both placed second in their weight classes with only one loss on the day. Baumler went 2-1 after scoring a pair of wins over wrestlers from Southwest Minnesota State; a 10-5 decision and a 9-1 major.. The West Union native's day ended with a 7-3 loss in the finals to Tyree Sutton of Iowa Central.
Westerlund scored a fall in his first match (1:20) and then picked up a 7-1 decision over Logan Linderbaum of Minnesota State to reach the semis. After a decision victory in the semis, Westerlund dropped an 8-2 decision in the finals to close out his day with a 3-1 record.
Cody Nelson (165) reached the semifinals with a win by fall (1:41) over Cody Heitman of Southwest Minnesota State and a victory by injury default. Nelson lost a 9-2 decision in the semis, but bounced back with 5-1 decision in the third place match.
Zach Bruns (149) and Dalton Hahn (184, unattached) both placed fourth with 2-2 and 2-1 records, respectively. Bruns' wins came by fall (3:31) and a 4-2 sudden victory over Zach Beaumaster of Southwest Minnesota State. Bruns dropped a tight 6-5 decision to SMSU's Cortez Arredondo in the third place match. Hahn scored a 9-0 major decision in his opening match before defeating teammate Connor Williams (unattached) 9-5 in the quarters. Hahn lost a 3-0 decision in the semis before withdrawing from the tourney.
Damian Penichet (149) went 3-1 to place fifth posting a win by fall (2:42), an 11-2 major decision and an 18-0 tech fall (5:37). His loss came in the quarters to Arredondo of SMSU in a 10-5 decision.
Jared Hensely (unattached) placed sixth with a 2-1 record in the 125-pound bracket. Hensley scored a pair of hard fought wins, while his loss came by just two points in the quarters.
Brandon Roen (174, unattached) won the 174-pound "B" bracket with a 4-0 record. Roen scored his first three wins by fall, which all came in the first period. In the finals, Roen scored an 8-5 decision over Austin Lamm of Iowa Central to improve to 7-1 on the year.
Bodie Garnier (197, unattached) placed third winning two of his three matches including a tech fall (18-3) win in his final match. Aaron Baker (141) also went 2-1 on the day with both victories coming by major decision (11-2 and 9-0).
The final Peacock to place on the day was Tanner Prochaska (157, unattached). The freshman went 3-1 on the afternoon to place fifth and even his season's record at 4-4. Prochaska's three wins all came with bonus points thanks to a fall (5:00), a 21-2 tech fall and a 15-7 major decision in the fifth place match.
Upper Iowa will leave the tournament format next weekend and open their run in the Northern Sun Conference for 2017-18. The Peacocks will head to North Dakota for a pair of duals at the University of Mary and Minot State University on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 9-10.
