DUBUQUE — Rylan Hughbanks is still a wrestling novice.
With just a couple years in the sport, the Bettendorf junior is headed to the Iowa state tournament.
Hughbanks was one of eight Bulldogs to advance through Saturday's Class 3A district meet at Dubuque Senior.
"Those are cool stories as a coach," Bettendorf coach Dan Knight said. "He's one of those kids who is all in and wants to learn as much as he can.
"He's pretty hard on himself, but you've got to remind him he's only been around the sport a few years."
Aiden Evans (106), Will Jefferson (138), Mason Morris (145) and Joe Tyson (152) won district titles for Bettendorf. Logan Adamson (120), TJ Cole (126) and Griffin Liddle (285) joined Hughbanks (132) as runners-up.
"I don't think we could have wrestled much better than we wrestled," Knight said. "Everybody performed well today. These young kids have really grown up this year."
The 14-year-old Liddle, in fact, was in a weight class with four state-ranked wrestlers. Seeded fourth, he beat Davenport Central's Manny McGowan 3-1 in overtime of a wrestle back to finish second and advance to state.
"(Griffin's) upside is huge," Knight said. "As he continues to figure things out, he's getting more confidence."
