Top Ten 2A First Round Bouts at the 2018 State Tournament

BY JIM THOMPSON For THE PREDICAMENT

Keaton Zeiment of DeWitt Central

106 – #3 Keaton Zeimet (Fr.) DeWitt Central vs. #2 Matthew Lewis (Fr.) Centerville

A hot little battle among a couple of the premiere freshman in all of class 2a.  Zeimet has not lost to an Iowa wrestler.  Lewis has only dropped close bouts to Daniel Kimball of Don Bosco and to top ranked Jarod Kadel (Columbus Jct) last week in the district finals.

113 – #2 Kain Luensman (Fr.) Monticello vs. #4 Brock Beck (So.) Grinnell

Beck finished 6th a season ago at 106 and faces a hammer in Luensman in the opening round.  Brock survived a district that had four ranked wrestlers within to make it out to state.  Luensman’s only loss on the year is up two weight classes against 7th ranked Nolan Noonan of Cascade.

120 - #9 Bryce Hatten (So.) Winterset vs. #5 Caleb Fuessley (Jr.) Center Point Urbana

A battle between returning 8th place finishers of a year ago.  Hatten placed 8th at 106 and Fuessley was 8th at 113.    Solon’s 7th ranked Zeb Gnida beat Fuessley in the district finals to put this match together.  Fuessley had knocked off Gnida at the WaMaC conference meet two weeks before.

138 - #3 Easton Graff (Jr.) Sgt Bluff Luton vs. NR Reed Abbas (Fr.) Clarion-Goldfield-Dows

Both wrestlers are making their first trip down to state.  This should be an entertaining match among two very talented wrestlers.

145 - #3 Mitchel Swank (Sr.) Creston-OM vs. #7 Colton Vest (Sr.) South Tama

Two very battle tested seniors lock horns in this wide open weight class.  Swank is a 3x qualifier and finished 5th at this weight class a year ago.  Vest has placed at the state meet the last two years and has had a great 2nd half to the season.

152 - #4 Kyler Reick (Jr.) Spirit Lake Park vs. #8 Caleb Swalla (So.) Van Meter-Earlham

Reick placed 4th as a freshman at 138 two years ago but fell short of making the stand as a sophomore.  Swalla makes his 1st trip to state and has wrestled several tight matches with good wrestlers this season.

160 - #2 Wes Cummings (Jr.) Prairie City-Monroe vs. #Luke Hageman (Sr.) Beckman Catholic

Both wrestlers did not qualify for the state tournament last year, but yet this arguably the best matchup in the 1st round of class 2a.    Cummings was ranked 6th in the final rankings before state last year, but injuries prevented him from making state.  Hageman finished 3rd in a brutal district draw last year behind current top ranked wrestlers Kolton Bartow of Wahlert Catholic (#1 at 170) and Julien Broderson (#1 at 182)

195 - #9 Shyler Langley (Sr.) Heelan Catholic vs. #3 Cody Fisher (So.) Woodward Granger

Fisher made the finals a year ago as an unranked freshman and has a favorable draw to make it back to the finals.  First, he must go through Langley who is a dark horse at this weight class.  Langley has not wrestled any of the top contenders in this bracket and comes into state with just two losses.

220 – #6 James Cherry (Sr.) Webster City vs. #5 Dakoda Powell (Jr.) Spirit Lake Park

These two met before Christmas where Powell won a wild 15-13 match in Fort Dodge.  Powell placed 6th last year at 220.  Cherry is making his first trip down to state.

285 - #6 Brendon Lunsford (Sr.) Fairfield vs. #5 Spencer Trenary (Jr.) Clarion-Goldfield-Dows

Both grapplers placed at heavyweight last year at state, but never crossed paths during the tournament.  Trenary grabbed 3rd place in 2017 and Lunsford took 6th.
