By G. Wyatt Schultz for The Predicament

106     #1 vs #3

Cullan Schriever of Mason City

Cullan Schriever (Mason City) 36-1 vs Grant Harbour (Norwalk) 35-3
Cullan Schriever has only one loss of the the year is to #4 nationally ranked Jake Rundell of Oak Park River Forest, a 2-1 score.  Harbour has three losses on the year and all against ranked individuals.  His losses are to #4 Lucas Uliano of Norwalk, #3 Keaton Zeimet of DeWitt Central and to Schriever.  If Cullan wants to repeat as state champion he will need to get by this first round match.

120     #2 vs #3
Kobey Pritchard (Southeast Polk) 31-6 vs Conrad Braswell (Prairie, CR) 41-6
Kobey Pritchard has six losses on the year with a couple to top ranked Biscoglia and some losses from out of state kids.  Braswell  has lost to 1A top ranked Cael Happel of Lisbon twice as well as a couple out of state wrestlers.  Both finished 4th a year ago,  Pritchard at 113 and Braswell at 106.

126     #4 vs #8
Brock Espalin (Des Moines East) 31-3 vs Cody Anderson (Waukee) 25-9
Both are Sophomores and returning place winners.  Espalin finished 5th at 126 and Anderson 3rd at 106.  If Waukee wants to stay in the hunt for a team trophy, Anderson needs a win to stay on the front side of the bracket.

138     #4 vs #7
Will Jefferson (Bettendorf) 40-5 vs Nathan Marchand (Southeast Polk) 32-9
Jefferson, a 7th place finisher a year ago, takes on Nathan Marchand of Southeast Polk.  Marchand didn't place a year ago but if Southeast Polk wants to get a trophy they will need contributions from everyone.

145     #1 vs #5
Cade DeVos (Southeast Polk) 35-3 vs Elliot Pohlmeyer (Johnston) 37-9
After a runner-up finish last year, DeVos looks to improve on that.  His first round match pits him against state qualifier Elliott Pohlmeyer of Johnston.  DeVos defeated Pohlmeyer in the semifinals of the CIML.  This match could play an important part in who gets a trophy at the end of the tournament.

152     #4 vs #7
Lance Runyon (Southeast Polk) 32-6 vs Kyle Hefley (IC City) 41-2
Runyon is coming off a 3rd place finish a year ago.  His losses this year have been to top ranked Grant Stotts of Valley and from out of state nationally ranked kids from The Cheesehead and Gardner-Edgerton tournaments.  Kyle Hefley of City High didn't qualify a year ago but has had an outstanding season.  His losses are to 4th ranked Harlan Steffensmeier of Ft. Madison and Hollinrake of Knoxville.  Again, if Southeast Polk wants to stay in the running they need these matches to stay in the team race.

160    #2 vs #3
Zane Mulder (Dallas Center-Grimes) 39-1 vs Jake Matthaidess (North Scott) 37-5
Both of these have lost to top ranked Nelson Brands of IC West.  Mulder finished 5th a year ago and this is his only loss in the finals of the Ed Winger Classic.  Mattaidess has lost twice to Brands and to two ranked individuals as well .  No team race will be involved but a great match in the first round.

170    #4 vs #7
Thaddeus Breitsprecker (Southeast Polk) 32-6 vs Mike Jasa (Prairie CR) 39-12
This is a match between ranked individuals again that is important for Southeast Polk to stay in the team race. Breitsprecker was a state qualifier a year ago, Jasa was not.  Thaddeus was a runner-up in the strong CIML. Jasa finished fourth at both the Bob Lueders Inv. and MVC tournament losing to Bartow of Wahlert in both matches.  Jasa and Bartow, both have a number of losses but don't count them out for placing.  The schedules both of these teams have may indicate the losses they get.

182     #3 vs #6
Brandon Tessau (Waukee) 30-7 vs Collin Hondred (Ankeny Centennial) 34-7
Two CIML qualifiers face off in the first round.  Tessau defeated Hondred back in December 7-6.  Top Ranked Joel Shapiro of Valley defeated Tessau in the finals of the CIML while Hondred lost his 3rd place match to 5th ranked Mitchell of Ottumwa.  In a loaded CIML Conference, if Waukee wants to get a team medal they need to stay on the front side of the bracket.

195     #4 vs #5
Brayden Wolf (Waverly-Shell Rock) 40-7 vs Ethan Barry (Clinton) 33-5
Neither one of these individuals qualified for state a year ago.  This is just a great matchup between two ranked individuals . Wolf finished 5th at The Cheesehead and 1st at the Bettendorf Midwest Classic and the NEIC Tournaments.  Barry won the MAC Tournament. A couple of his losses have been to top ranked Gordon of Waterloo East and Tanner Sloan of Alburnett.

220     #3 vs #5
Isaac Bales (Glenwood) 36-6 vs Beau Lombardi (Valley, WDM) 33-8
Bales finished 7th at the Council Bluffs Classic, 3rd at the Ed Winger and was Champion of the Hawkeye Ten Conference. Glenwood has seven state qualifiers and need points out of all of them if they want to get into the mix of the CIML teams.  Three of Lombardis' losses have been to 2nd ranked Hagan of Dowling Catholic.  He may have a few losses but all to quality opponents.  This is a tough first round match for both of these teams to compete for a trophy.
