COUNCIL BLUFFS — Gabriel Kjeldgaard figured he had everything to gain and nothing to lose.
So the Lewis Central High School senior filled out an application for a Foot Locker Foundation Inc., $20,000 scholarship.
Kjeldgaard found the scholarship one to his liking, since it focused more on community service and academics than just athletic achievements.
But with over 13,000 applicants, Kjeldgaard figured there was no way he would me the cut. So he just kind of forgot about it for a while.
Then came a letter informing him he was one of 50 finalists for the scholarship, which is awarded to the top 20 candidates nationwide.
Again, Kjeldgaard pushed the thoughts of the scholarship to the back of his mind, focusing on his schoolwork and community service.
