Williams makes the most of his second chance

CEDAR RAPIDS — Maleek Williams was given a second chance in life and he is busy making he most of it.
Williams, a junior on the Upper Iowa University wrestling team, advanced to the finals at 125 pounds at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships this year before losing to Elijah Hale of Central Oklahoma, completing a 30-10 season and an improbable journey that was almost cut short before it even began.

A heart condition led to a stroke Williams suffered on Nov. 2, 2015, leaving the then freshman in a battle for his live, some 1,600 miles from his home and family in Miami, Fla.

It was at that time that Upper Iowa’s head coach Heath Grimm and his wife and kids stepped up to become like a second family to Williams.
