Cornell Rams Relentless in 51-0 Win over Simpson

MOUNT VERNON – Cornell's wrestling fans barely had a chance to get comfortable in their seats during Thursday's season-opening dual with Simpson.

The Rams were scoring quick takedowns, earning a plethora of back points and terminating many of the matches early in a 51-0 romp over the Storm on Mike Duroe Appreciation Night inside the Small Multi-Sport Center.

It was a dominant debut for head coach Brent Hamm, whose Rams delivered the program's largest margin of victory since the 2006-07 season and first shutout in five years. The meet lasted all of 52 minutes.

The Rams (1-0) ran roughshod over the Storm (0-1) in racking up 48 near-fall points, while allowing none. Cornell notched 13 takedowns and gave up nothing.

Cornell compiled bonus points in nine bouts, highlighted by first-period pins from newcomers Killian Perrigon (FR/Oceanside, Calif.) and Casey Allen (FR/Gilberts, Ill.), and juniors Nic Jarvis(JR/Iowa City, Iowa) and Kendale McCoy (JR/Oak Park, Ill.).

Cornell 125-pounder Brody Lamb (SR/Smithville, Mo.) set the tempo with a takedown a few seconds into the dual and rolled to a 13-4 major decision. None of the next six matches went the full seven minutes.

Perrigon registered a fall in 1:49 in his first collegiate match at 133. Klayton Keller (FR/Des Moines, Iowa) tallied 14 back points in his 18-0 technical fall at 141 that was stopped in the second period. Austin Thomas (SO/Waterford, Wis.) followed suit with a 16-1 technical fall in 3:30.

Freshman 157-pounder Casey Allen executed a big move at the edge of the mat for a pin in 2:13, putting the Rams ahead 26-0 at intermission. Returning all-American Ben Hewson (SR/Loveland, Colo.), ranked fourth at 165, received a forfeit win.

At 174, Jarvis decked his opponent in 2:38. Bryce Oveson (SO/Wilton, Iowa) controlled his match at 184 with a 17-3 major decision.

Kendale McCoy earned the team's fourth pin of the night, scoring 12 first-period points before flattening his opponent in 2:00 at 197. Heavyweight Chris Lyons (SR/Overland Park, Kan.) won by decision, 7-1, to cap a near-perfect performance for the Rams.
