INDIANOLA — Winning for the 10th straight time against its rivals from Simpson College, the Central College wrestling team blanked the Storm 45-0 Thursday night.
The shutout victory for the Dutch was the third in the series between the two teams. Central previously whitewashed Simpson 49-0 on December 1, 1976 and February 13, 1986.
Five seniors were featured in Thursday’s lineup, the final dual match of the year.
“Our seniors have provided tremendous leadership throughout the season,” coach Eric Van Kley said. “They all gave a great effort and I’m very proud of all they’ve accomplished.”
In a tightly contested match, Jeremy Vester (senior, Oak Harbor, Wash.) downed R.J. Brown 16-3 at 165 pounds.
“Jeremy beat their best guy that wrestled tonight,” Van Kley said. “It was tied going into the third period but Jeremy got two takedowns and won the match.”
Seniors Cam Timok (Glen Allen, Va., Hermitage HS) and Chase Petty (Pella) set the table at 125 pounds and 133 pounds, respectively. Timok recorded a 19-4 technical fall and Petty had a 12-3 major decision.
“Chase and Cam got out offense started at the first two weights,” Van Kley said. “They were able to break matches open.”
Jeremy Scheuermann (senior, Jefferson, Greene County HS) had a 5-2 decision at 174 pounds while Lane Rumelhart (senior, Guthrie Center) won by forfeit at 184 pounds.
Central will host a Last Chance Invitational on Saturday inside H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse. The tournament is designed for underclassmen and reserves.
“We want to see our younger guys continue our offensive style and really be attacking,” Van Kley said. “We’ve been excited about what our younger guys have done in the room. This is one more shot for them to compete and we are excited for them.”
The wrestlers will hit the mats at 10 a.m.
