No. 1 Huskies Defeat No. 22 Peacocks in NSIC Dual

No. 22 Upper Iowa welcomed the No. 1 Huskies of St. Cloud State University to Dorman Gym on Thursday night. The Huskies picked up a 33-4 victory over the Peacocks to keep their undefeated record intact at 18-0 overall and 6-0 in the Northern Sun. UIU fell to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

While the dual began at 165 pounds, the biggest moment of the night for the home team came at 125 pounds. Upper Iowa got a big win when Maleek Williams scored a major decision over Brett Velasquez (No. 2) to bring the crowd to their feet. Williams scored the first three points of the bout with hands-to-face penalty and a takedown. After an escape for Velasquez, Williams scored a second takedown. Velasquez chose bottom to start the second period trailing 5-2. An escape and takedown for the SCSU wrestler tied the score at 5-5, but Williams quickly escaped to retake the 6-5 edge. Williams survived some tough positions to start the third period and scored a reversal to widen the gap. A late snap takedown and four nearall points allowed Williams to post a 14-6 major decision and give UIU their first points of the night.

Devin FitzPatrick (No. 11) and Cody Nelson opened the dual at 165 pounds. FitzPatrick scored a takedown and an escape around a Nelson reversal to take a 3-2 lead into the third period. The nationally-ranked Husky used a takedown and four-point nearfall to separate early in the final frame and picked up a 12-4 major decision.

At 174 pounds, Kolton Eischens (No. 2) scored a takedown and four nearfall points, but Gundrum was able to pick up a reversal to set the score at 6-2 heading to the second period. Gundrum had a solid second period with a two-minute ride on top and scored a reversal to open the third period cutting the gap to 6-4. Eischens secured the win with a reversal of his own on the way to an 8-5 decision.

In a matchup of nationally-ranked wrestlers, UIU's Dalton Hahn (No. 11) and Chance Helmick (No. 4) faced off at 184 pounds. Helmick scored the only points in the opening frame with a takedown. Hahn escaped early in the second period, but Helmick pounced back on top with a second takedown. An escape before time expired cut the gap to 4-2 heading to the third period. Helmick added four points in the final period with an escape, takedown and a ride time point to win 8-2.

Vince Dietz (No. 1) and Nick Baumler (No. 10) toed the line in the 197-pound match in another bout between two of the nation's best. The pair felt each other out in the opening frame with a handful of shots, but no points were scored. Dietz got an escape for the only point of the second period. Baumler escaped in the third period to tie the score at 1-1, but Dietz had picked up 1:01 in ride time. Despite a furious final thirty seconds from Baumler, Dietz scored the 2-1 victory to remain undefeated at 23-0, while Baumler moves to 18-6.

Bodie Garnier and Noah Ryan lined up for the heavyweight match. Ryan used five takedowns to post a 12-3 major and put the Huskies ahead 17-0.

SCSU's Garrett Vos (No. 11) scored a win by fall (5:52) after a pair of takedowns, a reversal and a two-point nearfall over UIU's Jared Hensley at 133 pounds.

Ryan Schmalen scored an escape in the second period and both he and Garrett Aldrich (No. 7) took penalty points on hands-to-face calls. In the third period, SCSU's 141-pounder tied the bout at 2-2 with an escape and added three takedowns to get away with an 8-5 decision.

James Pleski (No. 2) used six takedowns and an escape to secure a 14-5 major decision over Ryan Steffen in the 149-pound bout pushing the Husky lead to 30-4.

In the final bout of the night, Mac Spotts challenged Jake Barzowski (No. 6) at 157 pounds. Barzowski scored three takedowns and added a ride time point to win 7-4 and set the final score at 33-4 for the Huskies.

Upper Iowa will wrap up the regular season with the Mike Olson Alumni Dual on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Peacocks will host the No. 25 Wolves of Northern State University.
