Top Ten Class 3A First Round Bouts at the 2019 State Tournament

106 - #5 Jace Rhodes (FR) Mason City vs #10 Tanner Wink (SO) Lewis Central

Rhodes was a third place finisher in the very strong CIML, while Wink won the Hawkeye 10 Conference. He also place in the Council Bluffs Classic.

113 - #7 Jacob Penrith (SR) Cedar Falls vs #9 Dawson Biermann (SR) Western Dubuque

Both of these are in the Mississippi Valley Conference, Penrith was the runnerup at 120 while Biermann was the runnerup at 113. Penrith is also a two time state place winner.

132 - #4 Joe Pins (SR) Hempstead vs #7 Sam Kallem (JR) Ankeny

Pins has placed 3rd the last two years and hopes to be at the top this year.  A runnerup in the MVC to Braswell he faces Sam Kallem who was  a fifth place finisher in the strong CIML.

138 - #6 Ian Heise (SR) Waverly-Shell Rock vs #8 Graham Gambrall (SO) Iowa City West

Grambrall was a sixth place winner last year and the MVC Champion.  Heise was NEIC Champion. Both teams run strong schedules which accounts for some losses. For Waverly to stay in the trophy hunt, they need to stay on the front side of the bracket.

145 - #5 Eric Owens (SR) Ankeny Centennial vs #8 Tyler Murphy (SR) Hempstead

This is another CIML vs MVC battle, Owens was the runnerup to Caleb Corbin of Valley WDM, while Murphy lost a tought overtime match to Noah Cunningham of Kennedy.  Two of Owens losses were at the Don Miller invitational at Ft. Dodge to 1A top seed Wade Mitchell of Woodbury Central and the 1A number three seed Spencer Griffin of Emmetsburg.

160 - #6 Preston Terry (SR) Burlington vs #8 Kaleb Kingery (SR) Lewis Central

This is a matchup of 2 ranked individuals.  Kingery was the runnerup to 2A sixth ranked Justin McCunn of Red Oak at the Hawkeye Ten Conference tournament

170 - #5 Jake Hosch (JR) Western Dubuque vs Brennan Meacham (JR) Indianola

Jake Hosch was the MVC champion, He has an early season loss to Boscobel WI and then losses to 2A top ranked Paul Ryan of Mount Vernon and the number 2 seed Logan Neils of Ankeny Centennial.  Meacham is right in the mix having finished 3rd at five different tournaments but winning the Little Hawkeye Conference Tournament.

182 - #4 Nic Leo (SR) Ankeny Centennial vs #9 Alex Blizzard (SR) Bettendorf

Neither wrestler has placed at state.  Both teams need this match if they want to get a trophy at the end.  Bettendorf has 11 qualifiers so they need to keep the guys winning.  Ankeny Centennial, if they want a chance also needs to have the guys not only win but place.

220 - #8 Landon Green (SR) Iowa City West vs #5 Nate Heckart (SR) Norwalk

This is a matchup of a couple of ranked wrestlers.  Heckart is the number 4 seed. His losses have been to Cam Jones, the third seed, Dowling, and Hoyle of Solon.  Green finished third at the MVC behind Cam Jones and Tanner Schultz of LinnMar.  Schultz in ranked fourth.

220 - #3 Cam Jones (SR) CR Kennedy vs #6 Kalob Runyon (SO) Southeast Polk

Jones is the number 3 seed and has defeated qualifiers Heckart and Schultz.  Jones was the MVC champion and can help team that had six district champions.  Runyon was  the runnerup at the CIML.  Southeast Polk needs these guys if they want to get a trophy.

220 - #2 Cameron Baker (SR) CB Thomas Jefferson vs #4 Tanner Schultz (SR) LinnMar

An injury and a loss to top ranked Cody Fisher were 2 of Bakers losses.  Baker was the champion of the Missouri River Conference. He is the number 2 seed, but didn't draw very well.  If faces fourth ranked Tanner Schultz of LinnMar.  Schultz was the runnerup at the MVC, losing only to Jones of Kennedy.
