PHOENIX, Ariz. – No. 11 Iowa State (4-3, 1-0 Big 12) jumped out to an early lead on No. 7 Arizona State (8-1, 0-0 Pac 12), but ultimately fell to the Sun Devils, 21-12. The contest between ISU and ASU was the finale in the Duals on the Diamond, the first collegiate wrestling event to be held at a Major League Baseball stadium.
The Cyclones amassed a 12-3 lead in the front half of the dual, winning four out of the first five matches heading to the intermission.
Todd Small picked up another top-20 win on this road trip out west. This time he took out No. 15 Josh Kramer by 5-3 decision. Small scored on two takedowns, including one in the final 15 seconds, to salt away the victory over Kramer.
At 141 pounds, Ian Parker went 3-0 on Saturday. He capped off the day with a 4-2 victory over Navonte Demison. Parker scored on a takedown, an escape and rode hard, tacking on a point for 1:16 of riding time.
Filling in for the injured Jarrett Degen, Ryan Leisure was a force on top in his 9-4 victory over Dillon Ulrey. Leisure scored on two takedowns, a two-point nearfall and two escapes. He racked up 4:08 of riding time and was in complete control of the match.
David Carr also went 3-0 at the Duals on the Diamond. In the finale, he took on Arizona State's Jacori Teemer. After a scoreless first, Carr rode Teemer for the entire second period and turned the Sun Devil for a two-point nearfall at the end of the second. Carr earned an escape in the third and did well to fend off Teemer's attacks to close out the bout with a 4-1 decision.
Out of the intermission, the Cyclones ran into the meat of the Arizona State lineup. The Sun Devils went on to win the final five matches of the dual, including three by major decision, to close out the 21-12 victory.
Iowa State will remain on the road and travel to South Dakota State on Friday, Jan. 17. The Big 12 dual between the Cyclones and the Jackrabbits is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Brookings, S.D. Fans can watch the dual live on FloWrestling.
