The No. 10 Upper Iowa wrestling team closed out the 2019-20 regular season on Thursday night in St. Cloud, Minn. against No. 1 St. Cloud State University. The Huskies claimed a 29-9 win over the Peacocks thanks to wins in seven of the ten matches. The victory marked SCSU's 63rd straight as the team improved to 15-0 overall and 7-0 in the NSIC, while UIU dropped to 12-5 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
The home team opened the dual with a 14-5 major decision at 184 pounds as No. 2 Tyree Overton defeated Dalton Hahn to earn four points.
The Peacocks answered with two wins in a row at 197 pounds and heavyweight to move ahead 6-4. No. 2 Nick Baumler scored a pair of takedowns in his 5-3 decision over No. 9 Noah Ryan at 197 pounds, while Triston Westerlund posted a first-period takedown and then held on for a 3-2 decision over Ezaya Oropeza. Baumler's victory marked his 27th of the season and 100th of his career in an Upper Iowa singlet.
A ride time point proved to be the difference at 125 pounds as Brandon Betancourt outlasted UIU's Jared Hensley 7-6 to push the home team back into the lead 7-6 after four bouts. Hensley scored on a takedown and four escapes, but Betancourt's two reversals and a third-period takedown gave him the control on top for more than a minute of ride time.
No. 2 Garrett Vos increased the Husky lead to 15-6 with an 18-1 tech fall over Donny Schmit to improve to 13-0 on the season. Vos used a pair of nearfalls and four takedowns to build his lead.
UIU's Tate Murty pulled off an upset at 141 pounds when he handed No. 5 Garrett Aldrich his first loss of the year. Murty scored an 8-2 win a takedown in each of the first two periods and a pair of penalty points in the third to win his 26th match of the season.
No. 2 James Pleski and No. 7 Chase Luensman locked up at 149 pounds, and after each only grabbed an escape through the first three periods, the match moved into overtime. Pleski scored the winning takedown in the sudden victory period to end the match and give SCSU a 18-9 lead with three matches to wrestle.
The Huskies controlled the final three matches of the dual as No. 2 Jake Barzowski won 11-4 at 157 pounds, No. 3 Devin Fitzpatrick earned the first-period fall at 165 pounds and No. 4 Kolton Eischens posted a 19-1 tech fall at 174 pounds. The final three wins set the final score at 29-9 in favor of the Huskies.
Upper Iowa will head to the Sioux Falls Arena in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Feb. 29 for the NCAA Super Region V Championships. The first session will begin at 10 a.m. on that Saturday. The Peacocks are one of ten teams at the regional event, which consists of the nine Northern Sun Conference schools that wrestle and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
