By Howie Thompson, UIU Athletic Information

No. 10 Upper Iowa hosted No. 17 Minnesota State on Senior Night in Fayette; the Peacocks honored five seniors prior to the match. The Mavericks rallied from a pair of early, six-point deficits to defeat the Peacocks 22-15 behind wins in six of the ten matches. MSU held a pair of slight advantages on the night in takedowns (11-10) and escapes (14-11). Minnesota State improves to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC, while Upper Iowa is now 12-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference.

The dual began at 197 pounds featuring UIU's Nick Baumler, ranked No. 2, against Matt Blome. A pair of first period takedowns gave Baumler an early lead and the Peacock senior added to his lead with an escape and a takedown in the second to get ahead 7-2. After Blome cut the lead to three points, Baumler scored one final takedown to secure a 9-4 decision.

Triston Westerlund picked up the first takedown in the heavyweight match on a double leg shot and then racked over a minute of ride time. Max Villnow grabbed a pair of escapes to tie the score 2-2 heading into the final period. Westerlund escaped quickly in the third period and added a second takedown and ride time point to win 6-3.

At 125 pounds, Trenton McManus held a 1-0 lead over UIU's Philip Ihde heading into the third period. While Ihde tried to earn an escape he was returned to the mat. He was injured in the action and could not continue. McManus picked up the win by injury default. The six points gained by the Mavericks came right back at 133 pounds though as Donny Schmit picked up a win by forfeit when MSU left the weight open.

Trailing 12-6, the Mavericks turned to No. 9 Louie Sanders to slim the gap. Sanders hit a pair of takedowns to score an early 4-2 lead, but UIU's Tate Murty had a chance at a big score. Murty locked in a cradle and nearly turned Sanders over, but the Maverick wrestler broke loose and scored an 11-3 major decision thanks to five takedowns.

A pair of nationally ranked wrestlers met in the 149-pound bout when UIU's Chase Luensman, No. 7, toed the line against MSU's Kyle Rathman, No. 3. After an eventful, but scoreless first period, Rathman was the first to score with an escape in the second. In the third period, a locked hands call on Rathman tied the score at 1-1 and Luensman made it 3-1 with a reversal. Rathman stormed back with an escape and a takedown to grab a 4-3 lead with 29 seconds to go. Rathman held on over the final half minute for the one-point win giving the visitors a 13-12 lead.

Mac Spotts trailed 1-0 heading into the final period of the 157-pound match, but earned an escape early on to tie the score at 1-1. A takedown by Cooper Siebrecht in the final ten seconds supplied the tie-breaking points and Minnesota State expanded their lead to 16-12 after the 3-1 decision.

At 165 pounds, redshirt freshman Chance Throndson stepped in and scored a first period takedown when he came out on the top of a scramble on the edge. An unsportsmanlike penalty on Logan Saltou after an escape returned the lead to two, 3-1. In the second period, Saltou escaped to slim the lead to one and added a takedown to get ahead 4-3. After a neutral start, Saltou hit another takedown and added a ride time point to win 7-3.

MSU's Zach Johnston, ranked No. 10, took a 1-0 lead into the third period thanks to an escape in the second. UIU's Jamie Gehling was able to tie the bout at 1-1 in the third with an escape of his own, but Johnston scored the matches first takedown to pull ahead 3-1. Gehling escaped with 39 seconds left to wrestle cutting the gap to one, 3-2, but Johnstown scored the final points with a takedown and ride time point to get the 6-2 win and secure the Maverick victory as the team led 22-12 after the match.

UIU's Dalton Hahn took to the mat for the final bout of the night against Trevor Turriff at 184 pounds. Hahn carried a 3-2 lead after a takedown and escape around a Turriff reversal. Turriff tied the match with an escape in the second period, but Hahn got an escape, a takedown and a ride time point in the third period to come away with a 7-3 win.

Upper Iowa will close out the regular season next Thursday night, Feb. 13 with a final NSIC dual at No. 1 St. Cloud State University. The Peacocks and Huskies are slated to start at 7 p.m.
