Question and Answer with Adam Ahrendson of Union, La Porte City

How did you get started in wrestling?

I started wrestling because my older brother was doing it also. I started wrestling around kindergarten. I had a couple of friends that went to the practices and I started to like the sport.

Did you catch on to wrestling quickly or was it a gradual process?

I didn't catch on at wrestling when I was younger. I used to mess around the whole practice and just never focused on practice. It wasn't til my 8th-grade year that I started to pay attention and I did some winning. I only went to a few tournaments each year.

Did you wrestle in a club growing up, and if you did, how would you describe your experience with the club?

I started with the Knights wrestling club. I liked it there.  All my friends where there and that was our town club. In middle school, I started going to Bob Yilek in Belle Plaine. He really helped me work on certain positions that I was having trouble with. Then after 8th grade, I went to Immortal. That's where I still am at. I love it there, all of the coaches help me and push me to do my best. I have the best partners in the state of Iowa.

What are a couple memorable moments from youth/JH wrestling?

My favorite memory was schoolboy duals my 8th-grade year. It was my first year wrestling freco. I went to the duals because everyone said it was a good experience. I ended up only losing two matches out of 16.I just had a good time the whole time.

Who were your wrestling heroes growing up?

My wrestling heroes growing up would have been Max Thomsen and Jacob Holschlag.

How did you finish at state tournaments as a youth?

4-8th grade I qualified. 8th grade I got 5th.

How did you finish at the state tournaments you wrestled in at the high school level?

Freshmen qualified, sophomore second, junior first

Was there ever a point in your career where you noticed yourself jumping levels and making improvements?

Not in my wrestling. But in my sophomore year, I had a really big confidence booster.  At the Bobcat "Jerry Echenrod" I saw that I could hang with all of the older kids and better kids in the state.

Who were some of your toughest competitors in high school?

Mattew Doyle, Cade Tenold

Mattew Doyle

What is your favorite style of wrestling, Folkstyle, Freestyle or Greco-Roman?
I like Greco because it's different. It's all feel, and it really helps you with other styles. And you can throw people.

What are your wrestling goals for the upcoming high school season?

To keep wrestling hard and keep working forward towards my goals.

What are some of your favorite tournaments?

Bobcat ¨Jerry Eckenrod¨, There's always kids from all A's and there are so many good kids there.

Do you like dual tournaments or individual tournaments?
Dual tournaments, because you just get to hang out with your buddy's and wrestle and have fun.
How would you describe your wrestling style? Who would you compare yourself to?

I would describe my style as unorthodox. I do normal moves but I will change them a little bit. I would compare myself to Yainni D and Taylor Lujan.

Do you have any regrets involving wrestling that you want to make up as a senior?


What other sports do you play and how have you done at them?

I played football my freshmen year.

What are some of your hobbies besides wrestling? And what is a favorite memory?

Fishing and showing livestock. Winning champion Chester pig at the Iowa State Fair 2019.

You raise goats, how did you get started with this?

I wanted one so someone gave me a pygmy goat. That Christmas I asked for a Boer goat. I thought a Boer goat was a male. It wasn't.  Its a breed. Then I started to show them and kept buying more and more.

Are these for sale?  Do you show them?

I show them and sell them. I usually sell about ten goats for people to show at their local county fair.

Do you show these at area or local fairs?

Yes, I show at county fair, state fair, and national fairs.

Have you shown them at the state fair?

Yes, I have shown goats at State Fair two years now.

How have you done at these shows?

I have done decent at them. I have had some division champs at a national show and at the state fair.

What is the biggest challenge of raising your goats?

They like to get out a lot and get sick a lot.

Has the Covid-19 affect your schedule for this summer?

Its affected a lot of things from wrestling to ACT to shows.

Who takes care of the goats when you are away wrestling?

My parents and my brother

How does raising goats help you with wrestling? The commitment, the discipline, scheduling?

It teaches you hard work and shows you that not every day is good but you have on keep working.

What is some of the best advice you ever received, and who gave you that advice?

Do you have any advice for up and coming wrestlers?

Just keep wrestling and your time will come.

What are your college plans? Is wrestling in your future, whether it be competing or coaching? 
I am going to UNI to wrestle.
