W-SR, Waukee will battle for title on final day
Two-time defending team champion Waverly-Shell Rock leads Waukee 134.5-126 in the race for the Class 3A team title. It will be decided on the final day of the state tournament as the Go-Hawks have five finalists and four alive in the consolation bracket, while Waukee has four vying for a title and five in the wrestlebacks.
Sophomore Ryder Block (132) is back in the finals and will face Fort Dodge's two-time champion Drake Ayala. Block downed Indianola's Ryder Downey in the semifinals 5-1. He will be joined by Aiden Riggins (152), McCrae Hagarty (182), Jake Walker (195) and Luke Walker (220). Riggins was a 4-3 winner over Iowa City West's Graham Gambrall, Jake Walker downed Boone's Taner Harvey in sudden victory 5-3 and Luke Walker held off Southeast Polk's Kalob Runyon 3-1. Hagarty was a major decision winner over A.J. Petersen of North Scott.
Waukee saw 106-pounder Carter Freeman earn a 6-4 win over Fort Dodge's Dru Ayala to reach the finals. Koufax Christensen will wrestle for a title at 113 after pinning Waterloo West's Kaden Karns in 3:05. Truman Christensen (126) and Griffin Gammell (182) are Waukee's other two finalists.
Ankeny's Caleb Rathjen will go after his third state title Saturday night.
