Robert Roethler Award: Duane Harney
Duane wrestled at Woodward Granger High School from 1969-72. His love for wrestling took him to camps at University of Iowa with Dave McCuskey and Gary Kurdelmeir, and to Iowa State University with Harold Nichols and Les Anderson. He became a licensed wrestling official in the early 80’s and worked youth through high school tournaments and dual event. In 1985 Duane started the Beaver Creek Wrestling club and is still active in the club to this day; He has been a Junior High coach for the Woodward Granger school system and in 1990 became the assistant coach at the high school level. The next year Duane assumed the head coaching duties and held that position for 9 years.
Duane served on the Iowa State University Wrestling club board for 5 years 2 years as there President. And had a very close working relationship with Bobby Douglas head coach at Iowa State. Duane was employed by Barr Nunn Transportation as Vice President of Maintenance for over 37 years. He retired but continues to be active in the Beaver Creek Youth Club motivating youth to believe in themselves. His passion for the sport has brought many good people into his life and endless connections.
Duane gives much of the credit and gratitude to his high school coach and Hall of Famer Dennis Fields as well as his high school Principal Larry Blaker who opened the door for him to coach at Woodward Granger High School believing that he was a person of good character and had leadership qualities that young people needed.
